Works For Me Wednesday- We're Bakin' Cookies Up In Here

Seeing as though it is Lily’s birthday this week I, as her mother, had the duty to provide here with “treats” to bring to school. Except treats cannot involve cupcakes. Not cause they are filled with sugar and fat, but because they are messy. Crap. I make a really cute cupcake. So back to the drawing board.

My mom has a super yummy recipe for chocolate chip cookies, but Lily was having none of that. She wanted something she could use cookie cutters on and frost. I tried the whole, “Frosting is too messy honey,” but she was having none of it. She had a heart cookie cutter and she was determined to use it.

I realized as I searched through my recipes that I had never in fact made sugar cookies. I had cut and frosted sugar cookies many a time, but apparently (shameful) I had never actually made the dough. Hmmm….it seems like I should be stripped of my mother of the year award.

But I pressed on and made some sugar cookies. Then my mom got involved and, God bless her, made the whole process 10 times more complicated than it should have been. There was food coloring, red hots and an extra batch of dough involved. I was just hoping to borrow some sprinkles. Either way, she did provide some brilliant advice that I thought I would pass on to you.

When making cookies that require some sort of rolling pin action, typically you dust the surface and the rolling pin with flour. But do that to much and your dough gets really tough and you lose some taste. So instead, dust with powdered sugar. You get the same effect, but you get a sweeter cookie. And who doesn’t want a little more sugar in their sugar cookie. Thanks mom!!

  1. You can also use powdered sugar to grease and “flour” a pan when making a cake, so you don’t have those blah floury edges.
