Works For Me Wednesday- Some Blogging Advice

Today, I am going to let you in on a blogging pet peeve of mine. Now I don’t claim to be any sort of blogging expert, but I read a fair amount of them and run this lovely one you are reading right now. So, I have begun to develop some frustrations, annoyances if you will. But none bother me worse than this one, so I am going to make a suggestion for you bloggers that I find helps make the whole blog reading experience much more enjoyable (well for me anyway, and really who else do you need to please?).

When you link to something, like another blog, your own blog posts or an outside website, link so that it opens in a separate page. I don’t know why I find this so lovely, but I guess it is just too much work to have to use the back arrow trying to get back to whatever you were previously reading. Here is the bad news, I have no idea how to do this except on wordpress. Here, you just hyperlink to whatever you want and then choose, “open in a new window”. So uncomplicated, yet so not always done. Blogger and Typepad users, feel free to leave a comment telling others how to do this on your platform.

Also, just for fun, I would love it if you left a comment saying what your biggest bloggy pet peeve is. Unless it is bad spelling and grammar. I know mine is less than stellar. I needs me a editer :)

Comments

  1. Well that would’ve been good advice except for you didn’t tell me how to do it :( I guess I could figure it out, but I don’t have enough time to do that. I’ll think about it thought so I don’t annoy you any more when you read my blog. Ha.

  2. Well if I have one pet peeve it would be when bloggers write a bunch and a lot of words and they have a lot of run on sentences and they just keep writing a bunch more words over and over and they never stop what they’re saying to begin a new paragraph so the whole post is just one big long run on paragraph that is all bunched up together and looks like just a bunch of words that begin to give me a headache.

    :)

  3. Yeah, I’d love to know how to do this in Blogger. I work through Typepad for my job(s), and I adore the “new window” feature there!

My biggest pet peeve? That people on my feedreader don’t post more often! HAHA

  4. I have many bloggy pet peeves. Busy backgrounds that make the blogs hard to read. Dark font on a dark page. Too many graphics so the blog is slow to load… I could go on and on!

  5. I actually really dislike that, since if I wanted to open a link in a new window or tab, I right-click on it to do so. Otherwise, I expect links to open in the same window and not spawn five new browsers (or, as I have it set on my computer, tabs).

But if you really want to do that, the HTML code to add to any link is target="_blank" . This goes before the > in the <a href element of the link.

  6. it irritates me too, but i dont know how to do it in blogger, cant wait to hear if someone knows!!

  7. My bloggy pet peeve is lack of paragraphs. How people type on and on and on and never once hit the return key is beyond me!

  8. *Sigh* I wish I knew how to do that “open link-y in a new window” thing – it really is a huge pet peeve of mine as well.

I did find a little bit of a way to overcome it though – I hold the command key while I click on the link. Pulls it up in a new window/tab for me! I have a MAC, so I’m not exactly sure if this works with a PC, but hopefully there’s an easy way to do it on the PC’s as well.

Great works for me! Much love and God Bless!

  9. In Blogger when you make a link, your link title (the part you highlighted) ends up in quotation marks. Right after the end quotation mark, type a space, then type target=”_blank” after the space. (I italicized the parts you type for clarity here.)

I cannot stand music on blogs! I hate hate hate opening a blog and having music start. One, if I’m on the computer after hubby is in bed, I’m afraid the music will wake him. Two, if I’m listening to iTunes, the blog music plays over it. Three, I just don’t want to listen to other people’s music.

  10. Sorry Ewokgirl! I’ve got music on my blog, but I LOVE it. Just so you know…and are prepared :)

  11. You probably can change the settings on your browser to do this whether the blog/website code has the target=”_blank” or not. In Firefox, click Tools, then Options, then Tabs, then choose new tab. not sure about IE but I hope this helps :)

  12. I’m a new blogger, so this is good stuff to know! Thanks!

  13. Mine is the same as Amanda’s above – no paragraphs. White space is our friend!

    ~Heather :)

  14. My blog peeve is music, too. I don’t like sonic sneak attacks. :)

  15. Okay I figured it out, and the target=”_blank” definitely works but you have to actually go into the HTML code and edit it. I’ll work on it for you :)

  16. Tamra says:

Good point, and one that I was mumbling about just yesterday! Especially when the there is a whole page of links and I have to keep going back and forth…
Something that annoys me is when blogs only recognize commenters with the same blog format – for example, it will only ask for your link if you have a blogger account. I don’t know if I’m explaining well, but it makes it difficult if you want the link to your own blog to be available.

  17. Brother A says:

I have always been the smarter sibling and will edit for a small fee

  18. Nicole says:

My pet peeve really is grammar and spelling. It doesn’t mean I won’t read a blog, though; I just edit in my head as I’m reading! But then again, misspelled words anywhere get to me (like signs on businesses, graffiti, etc). I don’t mind if grammar isn’t perfect in a blog if someone is writing conversationally and you can tell that they are doing so.

    :)

  19. An easy way around this – instead of just clicking the link, right click it and from the menu that comes up, select Open in new tab. I ALWAYS use this so I have the original site still available.

  20. Blue Castle says:

I’m new to blogging, so I probably annoy more than I am annoyed myself. However, my pet peeve is having a ton of hits (say 200) in a day and only 1 person leaves a comment. I love comments and wish more people would leave them.

  21. Heather says:

I don’t even know if my links do that – I’m on blogger, so I think you’re saying they open in the same window…

Long paragraphs get on my everlasting nerve…

  22. That is a good idea. I usually just right-click and open in new tab when I check out a link, but I may go in and change some of my links so no one has to do that.

My pet peeve…I think what bothers me the most is when people use the little clichés that they use when they are speaking. ALL the time. Like, “so…um…yeah. And ya’ll don’t EVEN want to know. And I am SO going to scream.” It is okay once in a while, but every few posts? After a while, it stops sounding so cute.

  23. Oh, reading through this list just showed me all my bloggy pet peeves. I was reading and would say, “Yes!” Then read some more and yelp, “Yes! Yes!”

Incorrect spelling is a personal bugaboo, and I usually let it slide when I’m reading blogs. There are some words, however, that when people spell them incorrectly, steam just blows out of my mind. For example, confusing “lose” with “loose.” It makes me LOSE my mind!

  24. I’m another person that doesn’t like when the link opens in a new window and will just right-click to open it in a new tab or window if that’s what I want. Even professional web designer will agree that user preference on links opening in a new window is split about 50-50.

My blogging peeves would have to be music that starts playing as you open the blog and non-stop video posts. Part of the reason I like blogs is to read the words. I don’t mind a once a week thing but if someone starts using videos for 90% of their posts it gets dropped from my feed reader.

  25. Megan@SortaCrunchy says:

I’m with Kim and others – I just right click to open links in a new tab. I can do this in IE or Opera. Works like a charm and you don’t have a dozen browser windows to click through to find where you started from!

  26. My pet peeve is when I’m looking at WFMW and a blog that I open shuts down my internet. I have no idea which one(s) do that, but since I open a bunch of windows and then read them I have to start over. I wish I knew how to link to separate new windows in Blogger!!

  27. I hate when I go to a blog and music starts playing. Which is really ironic, considering that’s how my blog is!

I also want the link to open a new window. I’m too lazy to keep hitting the back arrow.

  28. I can’t stand it when people don’t put their email in their profile, which means that when they comment it shows from: noreply@blogger…or whatever. I like to be able to respond to commenters and that makes it much more difficult to track them down.

I prefer to have blogs open in new windows, but when they dont, I just use the ctrl click method when I open them.

  29. lesliemaddox says:

I so agree with this and have started doing it recently. I’m on Blogger so I have to go into the html code and manually add target=”_blank” to each link, but I think it’s worth it for my readers. I’m considering switching to WordPress because of this specific problem.

When I read others’ blogs, I right-click on a link to open a new window.

As for pet peeves, I could do without music on blogs. Or at least give me the option to turn it on.

  30. Another vote for the musci thing. SOOOOO annoying. So annoying in fact that if I visit a blog that does, that, I will close it immediately and never go back.

  31. I like new windows too. I’m glad you brought this up because I go back and forth- I wasn’t sure what the preferred way was.

My pet peeve is music. It always scares the crap out of me when it comes on. You’d think that I’d remember which ones have music :).

  32. My biggest pet peave, hands down, is music. My computer is right across the hall from the nursery where my toddler is napping, so music shuts things down pretty fast around here!

I have a few bloggers I actually like, but don’t read, because of the music. It’s a deal breaker for me.

  33. I’m new to blogging so I didn’t know that I could do that in wordpress. Thanks for the heads up!

I guess my biggest pet peeve is the busy backgrounds that make it hard to read the text. Why would someone do that?

  34. yestheyareallmine says:

I love the new window feature on wordpress. I have always prefered it myself.
My biggest peeve is someone who visits and doesn’t leave even a simple hello. Comments are important, even if you don’t leave them every time you visit someone. At least every few times someone visits a blog it would be a nice thing to leave a comment. Let the blogger know you are there!

  35. silver says:

I didn’t think I had blog pet peeves. But in reading the replies, I realized that I do:

    * Music. Please, for the love of the baby sleeping on my lap, do not have your blog play music. I don’t care if it’s the best song in the entire history of man. If your blog plays music, I will add it to the list of sites that my browser won’t let me visit. Seriously.

    * No paragraphs. It makes it really hard to read.

    * Changing font size and/or color. One color and one size for your blog, please. Yes, for the whole blog. Don’t change colors with each entry. It looks like my 3rd grade diary, where I used different colored pencils every day.

  36. karenamundson says:

great tip! I’m going to start doing it that way now. Thanks. No pet peeves here, yet. I haven’t been blogging long enough. Oh wait, I guess my only pet peeve is I wish I had more friends that did blog so I could read theirs. I’m trying to get them hooked. I was so against it at first, didn’t think I had the time, and now I totally LOVE it!!!

  37. Oh good – I have mine set to do that lol. My biggest pet peeve is when someone has music that plays automatically. It interferes with my own music, it can wake a sleeping baby when it suddenly plays loud, you have to play the where is that music coming from if you have more than one page open…

I do, however, like the option to play because I’m curious what that blogger likes in music. :)

  38. Music isn’t a major issue for me since I usually leave my sound off unless I’m specifically listening to something. And I’m just in the habit of opening links in new tabs since then I can open a bunch at once and then go through them all without going back and forth. It’s nice to know how to make your links (in blogger) open in a new tab though since that means people are more likely to come back to your site (since it’s still open) and finish reading or browse some more.
My other pet peeve is definitely spelling. Hello! Don’t you have the automatic spell check thing? At least in my browser (Firefox) it underlines every word anywhere that I’m typing (like in this comment box) that is misspelled. There is one person in particular that this really bugs me and if I didn’t get ideas for photography from her blog I would seriously just quit reading. It’s to the point that sometimes I have to read a sentence a couple of times just to get what she’s saying.

  39. I agree with you and think that my own blog is a problem at times but I have no idea how to fix it. I will do some research and try find out.

Good post, I might not have taken the initiative to find out how without it.

  40. It bothers me that people rarely comment on my blog. I’m a new blogger, but I know how many readers I have and I would love a little bit of chit-chat. It makes me feel a bit lonely, wah, wah, wah!

  41. That’s funny because I HATE when I click on a link and it goes into a separate page. I LOVE my back arrow. :)

  42. The music thing annoys me once in a while. Though I have music on my blog it’s actually there for me and there’s the option to play it. It doesn’t automatically play when someone clicks over to my blog.

I love it when a new link I’ve clicked on opens in a new tab. Love it. But I have learned to right click to open a new tab as a habit.

I wish that when I click on someone’s name (in the comments of another person’s blog – or even worse when I reply to a comment left on my blog or emailed to me), it took me straight to their blog and not their profile. Because then I have to click again, to get to the specific post. And if they have more than one blog, I have to go searching. I am not sure if this is true for all formats, but it is for blogger. Ugh!

  43. spelling is definitely a pet peeve of mine – I also hate it when people don’t comment…I LOVE comments and love it when new people will at least say hi!
