Works For Me Wednesday- Softened Butter

wfmw   Tis a simple tip this week. I enjoy baking. I wish I did it more but frankly I don’t have the time and I just end up eating an entire pan of brownies in one sitting. But if I had the metabolism I had when I was 19, you can bet I would be a baking fool!!

I am not a good “plan ahead” kind of baker so usually I am grabbing ingredients as I go. Which means my butter is coming straight out of the fridge in its super solid state. But butter mixes much better if it is a little soft. I have tried microwaving it, but I usually end up with a mess on my hands and liquid butter.

So to soften a stick of butter quickly, pour yourself a bowl of warm water. Stick butter in said bowl. Let sit for a few minutes. Voila, softened butter. If this tip looks familiar to you, it is because I completely and totally ripped it off from this months Real Simple magazine. But I also have tried it and it works. And may I just say I big puffy heart love that magazine. Maybe I will try and be more original next week.

  1. The microwave can work. Use half power for about 5-6 seconds. The water trick sounds good too though!

  2. Could have used this yesterday! I was baking cookies & forgot to set out the butter beforehand…it set me back more than an hour, waiting for that butter to soften. I’ll have to remember this for next time.

  3. I hope this doesn’t sound like a stupid question, but do you keep the butter in the wrapper or do you take it off before putting it in the water? Because this tip is one I will USE!

    :-)

  4. We put a stick of butter in our microwave at 10-20% power for one minute. Usually works perfectly! But this tip is great for little helpers who aren’t allowed to use the microwave yet…

  5. I think you’d want to take it out of the wrapper before you warmed it :)

I can’t wait for this month’s issue to arrive! That is a great tip (although I am glad to see I am not the only one who wondered about the wrapper!).

Also…if you REALLY failed to plan ahead and you are dealing with frozen butter, use a cheese grater to grate the butter and it will soften very quickly. It’s weird, but it works!

  8. Phew, there you are. I have a suggestion too. What you do is get yourself a really old, inefficient oven. When you start mixing the ingredients, turn the oven on because it is so poorly insulated it will take about 20 minutes to preheat. Put your butter on the stove, on a little plate. It will warm up with the stove. Mix the dry ingredients first, and by the time you get to the wet ingredients, the butter is nice and melty and you’re all set.

  9. I’m going to have to try this! I always end up overdoing it in the microwave, and like you, I rarely pull it out in time. Great tip!

This is pure genius. Don’t care where you got it – I thank you a million times for sharing this. If you could only know how many times I’ve over-nuked my butter….

  12. great tip. I usually melt the butter in the microwave.

  13. I bake A LOT and have never heard this! Thanks for sharing! I’ll give it a try!

By the way, you can also use a rolling pin and some muscles to mush the butter enough for a “softened” recipe.

  16. Good tip! It beats my method (when I don’t have enough softened butter) of making a cup of tea and then setting the butter in a steel mixing bowl on the burner where the teakettle was!

But I often do have enough soft butter, because we just leave some butter out at room temperature all the time, in order to have spreadable butter ready for toast. To my surprise, it stays fresh for a week or more! Click my name for details.
