How To Stalk a Blogging Celebrity

wfmw You KNOW you know what I am talking about. If you have been reading blogs for 5 minutes, you have bloggers you idolize. They are your must reads. The ones you tell your friends about. The ones where when you comment and they respond, you squeal, show your hubby the email and save it in a folder marked awesome so you can pull it out and look at it on days when your traffic is low. No? You don’t do that? Yeah……me neither…..

Blogging conferences are the perfect venue for “in real life” blog stalking. But you TOTALLY don’t want to seem like the nerdy band geek (no offense to any band geeks, I was in show choir) going up to the head cheerleader and making a fool of yourself. You have to play it cool and act like it is totally natural to be meeting the first blogger you ever read who gets like 2 million hits a day.

The nice thing about Blissdom being my third blogging conference is that I knew a lot of people going in. So I was a teensy tiny bit less nervous this year about hanging with the big dogs. A little less. I even knew some of them before they were celebrities.

Here is what you must remember. Celebrity bloggers put their pants on one leg at a time. In the case of Scribbit, my new bloggy BFF, she puts her very, very long legged pants on one leg at a time. Oh and when you see your bloggity idol, you should avoid saying things like, “Wow, your really tall.” Um, yeah.

Look for an in. A better in than “OMG, I totally have read your blog forever and I am so excited to meet you!!!!” as you run and tackle them. I prefer a tweet:

I like a bit of subtlety. Keeps them guessing. Good thing is, my subtlety worked. I totally got to hang with Scribbit. And she was delightful. And gracious. And humble. Which made me love her more. And I didn’t make a fool out of myself. Much. Hopefully.

For more (and more helpful) tips, head over to We Are That Family (another celebrity I TOTALLY know and hang with ;))

  1. Hysterical! I’ve yet to attend a blog conference but I KNOW when I do I’ll be all Shaun Cassidy/Leif Garrett’s in the house when meeting those bloggy idols.

So funny—nice to know I’m not alone. ;)

  2. teehee. I totally know what you mean. I was totally giddy at Blogher this year. Stalking is fun. I mean, so i’ve heard. :)

  3. {Giggles} and I found our blissdombabies worked well to attract some of my bloggy crushes too :)

  4. I said the exact same thing to Scribbit, and than felt like an idiot:P She was delightful:)

  5. Did I ever give you my autograph??? ;D

  6. You are too funny…and I definitely want my autograph after you rocked that country song. :)

  7. I’ll keep these tips in mind if I ever meet a celebrity blogger. I had never heard of Blissdom until a couple weeks ago and now I’m jealous I couldn’t go. LOL

  8. Yes, I did close to the same thing. I tweeted another blogger during the keynote asking for a chance to meet her. I met so many really neat and down to earth “BIG” bloggers. I actually hung out with my all time fav most of the weekend and now consider her a great friend. It was “Bliss”dom. :-)
    You did rock that song!!!

You’ve done it. You just opened the door to all of your fans. Be prepared. And a little leery. :-)

  10. This is too funny!

I was at Blissdom but I’m sure no one was even thinking about stalking me:)

Enjoy being a stalker while it lasts b/c post like this will make you turn from a stalker to the one being stalked all too soon:)

  11. funny. i want to hit up a bloggy conference and hang with the cool kids, too;)

  12. hmm…. Actually, I’ve always put my pants on both legs at the same time. … am i the only one who does? Should I be famous for this? Maybe I should change the name of my blog to ‘musings of a person who doesn’t put her pants on one leg at a time’…

Anyways, glad you had fun at blissdom :)

  13. you are too funny! I’m typically pretty content to gawk from a distance. Actually meeting them in real life would probably send me into embarrassing hives.

  14. Funny and true. At my first conference I was “star struck” and couldn’t properly say hello to my most favorite blogger. I got better at it on my 2nd conference. It only gets easier, no?
.-= OHmommy´s last blog ..Love dot dot dot =-.

  15. For the record – I knew you before you even had a blog. Strange to think of – but I am glad I can say “I knew you when”.

  16. HAHAHA! I don’t have a folder marked “Awesome” that I put reply e-mails and comments from favorite bloggers either. *wink wink*. I mean, what? People really do that? Psshhh…

I think I would totally die if I ever got to meet MckMama, Angie Smith or many others! I know these celebrity bloggers are sually really cool and nice people. Which makes them even cooooler. So glad you got to meet your idol.

You will definitely end up being the one stalked in the near future.:oD

  18. I’m sorry to tell you, but I’ve perfected the art of stalking a blogging idol. At BlogHer, whenever I spied her, even when talking to my friend, who, you know, could actually introduce her, I ran the other way.

  19. I can see why you cracked yourself up – this made me laugh, too! I’m hoping to attend Blissdom next year and I’ll definitely remember this advice! :)

  20. It cracked me up reading this–and like Lana, I’m actually someone who sits on the bed and throws on both pant legs at once. So maybe we’re soul mates, you and I? :)

And Becky–I was thrilled to meet you and Staci! You were both so sweet and nice it made me feel so comfortable!

Being from so far away I hardly ever get to meet other bloggers so when I’ve gone to these conferences I usually feel as if everyone already knows each other and I’m at a bit of a disadvantage–but it really was easier with this being my second conference, that helped a bit. But when someone so nice as you introduces themselves like you did it’s wonderful. I wish more people would be brave like that (myself included). Though half the time when I meet someone I end up sticking my foot in my mouth!

And that head cheerleader thing completely had me on the floor because you know the only time I was ever brave enough to try out for the cheer squad was in Junior High, I practiced my handstands against the living room wall for three weeks in preparation, worked on getting down into the splits and tried my best to look perky but did I even make the cuts? Nope. Very bitter to this day :)

Kidding. Though I did do some sobbing for a day or so.

  21. Oh, great advice. I met my work related idol several years ago. It was an interesting meeting, but I did act like a gushing loon first. Wish I’d had your advice :).

  22. Sheesh. I wish you’d posted this last week. Then I wouldn’t have made a fool of myself when I met you ;)

    Ha! Just kidding!

But, seriously, you are a doll! And it was awesome meeting you :)

  26. Because I would totally want to meet YOU! And I’m so jealous of all you luckies who get to go to blogging conferences…
I seriously almost tried to get to Blissdom, but it’s probably for the best considering the whole MOVING thing and all it’s related expenses!

  27. She IS tall. and beautiful. i’m so glad i got to meet her.

  28. So funny! Glad you go to meet her! Oh, and I’m really tall & it’s ok if you are so overwhelmed at finally meeting me that it’s all you can say. :)
