Works For Me Wednesday- Grandparents Day

wfmw    I am not one for celebrating arbitrary holidays, but if there is one group of people that deserves celebrating it is grandparents. I have so many cherished memories of mine. Whether it is my grandma teaching me how to sew, my grandpa flying me in his two seater plane or my other grandma baking pies in her tiny kitchen, my heart is full whenever I think of them.

Now I have the privilege of raising my kids in the same town as all of their grandparents. It wasn’t a luxury I enjoyed when I was growing up so I don’t take for granted how lucky we are to have so much family surrounding my girls. They love playing tea party with their Mimi, learning to fish with their Papa J, pretending with their Coco and swimming with their Papa C. I love being there while they create memories with their grandparents. And believe me, the hubby and I wouldn’t be the parents we are without them around.

Did you know that there is an official Grandparents Day? I didn’t. I know there is a Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. My kids often wonder why there isn’t a kid’s day. Um hello, everyday is kid’s day!! But September 13th is Grandparent’s Day. Not only that, but it is the 30th annual Grandparent’s Day. Which basically means I have thirty years to make up for this year.

Mom Select is encouraging bloggers to write special posts about their grandparents between September 10th and 13th. And Grandparents.com has created a page with a whole bunch of ideas of how to honor the special people in our lives. They have even created a badge for you to display on your website to let people know that you are participating in the celebration. I would tell you what we are going to do, but since all the grandparents read my blog, I am keeping my lips sealed.

Have you ever celebrated Grandparents Day? If not, do you have any plans to celebrate this year? I would love to hear your ideas.

  1. Thanks for the info! I’d just noticed it on my handy dandy holiday calendar and wanted to do something special. I’d heard of the day before but didn’t know when it was. I cherish my memories too. My kids are blessed to have 3 of 4 grandparents, plus 2 great grandmas, living locally.

  3. Thanks for talking about Grandparents Day! But, how about the grandparents my kids no longer have? Both my mom and dad passed away a few years ago from cancer. I’m part of an organization called, Parentless Parents, and we’re using Grandparents Day to honor those grandparents our children no longer have in their lives. You can find us on Facebook by searching “Parentless Parents.”
    Thanks,
    Allison

  4. This one always sneaks up on me. Thanks for reminding me. My grandparents are all long gone, but I’d like to have my kids do something special for their grandparents. I’ll have to check out the ideas.
