Works For Me Wednesday- Family Game Night

wfmw  One of our favorite things to do as a family is board games and card games. And I am not sure if I have mentioned it before, but I might have a bit of a trash talking competitive problem when it comes to such games. I have to severely dial it back on Chutes and Ladders. And I refuse to let my kids win. Ok, I might have a slight problem.

I don’t think it is a mystery to anyone that “family time” has been suffering for a while with overscheduling, too much TV, etc. So the people over at Hasbro have declared Wed. Sept. 23rd as National Family Game Night. It just happens to coincide with National TV Turn Off Week. How fun right? I might even put aside my competitiveness in the spirit of family togetherness.

What is your favorite board game? And how will you be celebrating Family Game Night? If you need some ideas, head over to Hasbro’s Family Game Night page for some tips. And for more tips, head over to We Are That Family.

  1. I just recently started reading your blog! My favorite board game is called “Settlers of Catan.” It’s a bit advanced in terms of strategy, so best to introduce to kids when they’re in their young teens, but it can be a blast with other adults. It’s a German style board game — very fun!

  2. Do they have any games for one? LOL–hubs would croak a stroke if he had to play a game!! Think it’s wonderful that you all do it with your little ones though–we did it more when the grandparents visited. Aw . . . my mom and dad loved playing games with them when they were little :) Thanks for bringing back the memories, precious.

  3. I must say – Chutes and Ladders is the worst! Right when you think you’re finally at the end, that stinkin’ big slide starts the never-endingness all over again.

And don’t tell my 3yo that I hid all the pink cards from Candy Land… or that the basket spilling in Hi-Ho Cherrio means that ALL the cherries go back on the tree.

I believe in modified rules. :) But I do love to play games with her!!

  4. lmfao

that’s hilarious. I don’t play many games with my son because he has a serious attitude problem when he plays.

  5. With a one year old in the mix, we haven’t played a lot of games with our three year old, but we do play memory with her. We’re planning to choose a new one for her birthday this month–my husband’s vote is for Don’t Break the Ice.

As an adult I love Scrabble, Bogel, and all sorts of cards.

  8. I am a huge fan of game nights! For my husband and I it’s Canasta, Monopoloy, and Boggle. But with the kids, my favorites are Candyland and Hi Ho Cherry-O. I’m not a fan of Chutes and Ladders.

We love games and need to schedule game night more often. We just recently got horses so we have been going horse riding lately, but hey…its as a family…which is what counts!

  10. That is awesome! I think it sounds like a great day to introduce a new board game to my family…. I’ll have to get to thinking on which one… and I LOVE no TV days.

I have a giveaway going on for Works for Me Wednesday on my blog for a Couponizer… if you don’t know what that is it’s definitely worth checking out!! Thought maybe you and your readers might be interested :)

  12. Our daughter is too young for games, but for the grown ups we love Settlers of Catan and Carcassone. (We have a travel version of Carcassone that we have been known to take to a restaurant and play while we wait for a table or food- on our anniversary night out.)

  13. We just started playing Blokus at Christmastime. (Didn’t you recommend it?) Even a five year old can play this one, and it’s fun for adults too!

  14. when I was a kid we could play monopoly for hours

  15. Our favorites are Go Fish and Littlest Pet Shop Guess Who (my girls are 4 and 6). It’s tough to find games that are simple enough for a 4 yo and challenging enough for a 6yo!

  16. We love games, but I didn’t know this Wednesday was an official game night! Thanks for the excuse to cast aside my chores and play some games! :-) Click my name for details about my four-year-old’s favorite games.
