Works For Me Wednesday- Clean Your Counter

I am not sure if I am the most qualified person to be talking about “streamlining your kitchen” but it is a themed WFMW day over at Rocks in my Dryerso I am playing along. Those who have been in my kitchen can just pretend that it looks like Martha’s, mkay? Shhh, play along.

I have given lots of kitchen tips over the year. Here are a few of my favorites: Here, here, and my personal favorite, here. I thought seriously about phoning it in and rerunning something cause I only have so many inspired kitchen tips in my brain, but I have a simple thought for you today.

Get rid of the crap on your counter. It makes your kitchen look messy and small and chances are there is a better place for it. If you don’t use it nearly everyday it should go in a cupboard. If you don’t use it once a month, you might want to consider storing it in the closet/basement. If you registered for it and have never used it? Donate that baby. You know the things I am talking about. Quesadilla maker, sandwich maker, smore maker. Basically anything that ends in maker is probably a bad call on the registry.

In case you are dying to know, my counter has a toaster, electric kettle and french press (hench the kettle). Let’s just pretend that is it and ignore the pile of papers, recycling, dishes and assorted pacifiers Hannah has deemed “yucky” for no apparent reason. Thankfully, WFMW doesn’t require pictures.

  3. GREAT tip! I need to get my entire family gathered around the computer tonight and read it outloud! LOL! Why is it that our kitchen counter, our domain, our “work space” gets chosen as THE best place to deposit all things unkitchen??? Somedays it absolutely drives me wild. I’ll clear it off and five seconds later, there are six broken toys, four dirty cups, five pieces of opened and scattered mail, two sign and return papers from school (Yeahh) and crumbs from the latest snacking frenzy? Sorry, I’m having a CALGON moment.
    Again, great tip! :)

My counters aren’t too bad. Yk, if my husband would get the blasted FISH TANK out of the kitchen, it would be helpful. Gross. Wanna eat over?

  5. I agree. I’ve heard it said that if you don’t use an appliance at least 4 times a week, store it in a cabinet. Hmmm… so why is my blender and coffeepot sitting on my counters?

I think we develop “kitchen blindness.” I honestly don’t even look at those appliances!

  7. You are too, too funny!!! Our house is on the market, so I went around and took most everything off of the counters and either stored it or put it inside the cabinets. I haven’t missed a THING! Crazy! Thanks for the laughs! And by the way…I LOVE my s’mores maker! :)

  8. Really good tip! Hilarious about leaving anything with maker off the list. I had no idea there was a twinkie maker though….

  9. Great post! And so funny–just last night I tackled the huge pile of paper and mail that accumulates on our counter. So much better. I am ruthless with appliances, and I hate knick-knacks in kitchens, but I’m terrible with the paper.

I totally agree! :D I keep only the items on the counter that I use daily and no makers for me! :D

  11. LOL, I was re-reading the posts you linked to and the last one was THE BEST! Personally, you can recycle old posts if you want to, it wouldn’t bother me!

But you’re right about the counters. Ours are wood and I like to keep them debris-free so when the mood strikes for me to oil them, they’re ready!

  12. It’s the kids things that are getting my counter down. Papers, projects, half eaten food. Ugh.

  14. this is SO TRUE! I bought a baker’s rack and put it against the wall in my kitchen so I still have all my gadgets handy, but my counter space is free. works like a charm. (just put the stuff with blades — the knife block, blender, cuisinart, etc — on the top rack away from toddler fingers.)

  15. I completely agree!

If you keep your kitchen clutter free, since it is the heart of the home….you can feel more organized.

A clean, organized kitchen is a happy kitchen!

I hear ya. I hate a cluttered counter.

Even though I just said that like the biggest hypocrite.

  17. This is so true! Because we have an open concept house (and a long kitchen counter), when our counter is messy, it makes the whole house seem messy. Unfortunately, it is so darn easy to set stuff on it. We have been working hard on getting some stuff off the counter, but we still have a lot of *stuff* (appliances, etc.) along the edges.
