Winter Olympics

I came out on Twitter, might as well come out over here. Come over here. No closer. I need to whisper…… I don’t really care about the Olympics.

I know I am supposed to. My husband’s is appalled as evident by his Facebook status update yesterday:

And is it just me or is he taking over my blog? Or most certainly beginning to upstage me. In my defense, I DID like the movie Miracle.

I get that they are a big deal. And that they somehow unite us. And that they celebrate the hope that anything is possible. And that flipping off a really high thingy and landing upright and skiing down a bunch of moguls? Well, that is pretty cool.

At Lily’s school last week they had their own winter Olympics. She was on team India. And was all about the Olympics. Actually it was ridiculously cute. They had opening ceremonies where each country got to carry in their flag. They put laminated paper on their shoes and did speed skating, played hockey, even did curling. I am not sure how. About 2 minutes into her explanation I was just as confused as I am watching ACTUAL curling. And today they had closing ceremonies. Her team won one bronze (probably more than India usually gets in the winter Olympics since it isn’t exactly the land of snow). Apparently Sweden got like five golds. It was quite controversial.

So in her honor we taped the opening ceremonies so we could watch together. And I must saying watching with her, I caught a little bit of the fever. She was so excited. Every time a new country came out, she would shout out their name and ask about their country and their athletes and critique their outfits (the one part we were on the same page about).  When team USA arrived she was bursting at the seams. It was fascinating to watch through her eyes.

So maybe I am a fan with a small f. As long as I get to watch it snuggled up next to my favorite six year old. That I am a big fan of.

Comments

  1. NOT a fan?!?! Kidding. I actually enjoy the overall games, but there’s certainly some I like better than others! Funny though: You have an ad on the left for “full coverage of the games on MSN” (ha!)

  2. I love figure skating, because hello? Cutting Edge? One of my favorite sappy movies? But that’s about it. I do think the ski jumping – or whatever it’s called – is cool, but I’m not going to turn on the TV for it. Yeah…I’m not a huge fan of the winter Olympics either.

Mainly I’m not a fan of the Olympics interrupting my normal TV viewing, to be honest. That’s a real bummer.

    • are we the same person? Honestly!! The Cutting Edge. I love it. And when you get right down to it, I have to agree. Not a fan of interrupted TV. Thankfully American Idol and Lost are not reruns this week.

  3. I don’t ever pay attention to the Olympics either…oops. :) I feel like it’s for the athletes and those who care about sports, which I don’t. Oh well…ha.

  4. I feel the same way! I was never into them before but my son has the fever so we’ve been taping and watching them together and i have to admit i got the fever too GO USA

  5. I don’t care for them either. I did dig the opening ceremony of the Summer 2008 games, but mainly because I was heavily medicated, having birthed a baby just hours before.

Maybe I’ll get more into them when the kids are old enough to want to watch them. For now, I’ll just stick to feigning a mild interest when it comes up in conversation.

  6. Honestly, I don’t care about the winter Olympics at all either. My daughter also loved the Opening Ceremonies too and it was neat watching with her. I’m just not into snow, cold, and ice especially when I just got done shoveling it. I wonder if I’d be more interested if the Winter Olympics took place in the summer when I’m too hot to even think? :)

  7. Your husband is one funny fella! I’m laughing, though, at little kids “skating” with laminated skates! How cute!!
