Why You Shouldn't Vote

Can’t wait for the election to be over. I have tried to avoid politics on this blog with almost 100% success. I have strong feelings about this election, but I have found pretty much that people agree with you or don’t and few will have their mind changed. When someone engages me in dialogue that truly wants help understanding the issues, I love to give my point of view. But those are few and far between. Mostly people just want to tell you why you are either brilliant (if they agree) or an idiot (if you don’t).

I am sick of being called naive, stupid, rednecked, uncaring or my personal favorite selfish. But I am sure others are sick of being called unpatriotic, immoral, un-Christian or whatever else is thrown at the other side. I hope it gets better after Tuesday, but it probably won’t. But at least we will have a president. Man, I hope we have a president. Can’t take another 2000.

Can we all, on both sides, at least agree that this “get out the vote” campaign has gone awry. Don’t get me wrong, I strongly believe people should vote. I haven’t missed an election since I turned 18 and I don’t intend to in the future. People are literally dying right now for that right. But this notion that everyone should vote is ridiculous.

I have seen footage of people voting who haven’t a clue what they are voting for. I heard one person say they were voting for Obama because they really liked his pick of Sarah Palin for VP. Seriously? This is the information age and this is what we have to show for it? Voting is a right, yes, but it is also a privilege. And all these celebrities and organizations telling everyone they have to vote aren’t helping matters. Some people just frankly shouldn’t vote.

Again, I am not talking about denying anyone the right to vote, but I think Absolutely Bananas has it right. Check out her pre-requisite to vote. In fact, after seeing it, I might be writing her name in ;)

  1. Amen, sister. Voting is important, but it’s also important to have an educated vote. I feel pretty strongly about a certain candidate, but I am sick and tired of all the uneducated e-mail forwards accusing the other side of being the devil or the antichrist! How is it possible for half of our country to see the other half as idiotic for supporting their candidate? Well, I’m preaching to the choir (as I can tell from your post!) so I’ll step down off the soapbox now… thanks for your post, though!

  2. I am anxious to know the outcome, scared of the fallout by whoever is upset about it, and thrilled it is almost over! I’m trying my hand at my first Mr. Linky today and would love it if you would stop by and join in! It’s easy- just link your favorite post for everyone to read.

  3. I couldn’t agree more. I sickens me to watch the coverage of people being taken to the polls to vote for a specific person and in return they are given some perk like a pack of cigarettes or something. These people have been registered to vote and then taken to the polls without an inkling of an idea as to who they are voting for or why (short of the perk). It is just not right!

I voted this morning and it was not a great time!

  5. I’ve written more of the same on my blog.

I’m pretty certain about my candidate too, but I hate what this race has become– name-calling, prejudices, extremes… I just can’t wait for tomorrow when we (barring all other insanity) will have a new President!

  6. I couldn’t agree more! I saw that same footage of people saying they really like Obama’s running mate pick – Palin. Huh? Voting is powerful and people should take it seriously, do their research, understand their issues and KNOW that when you do go to the poles if there are offices/candidates that you don’t know anything about you don’t have to vote for either side. I don’t think enough people know that you can leave some areas on the ballot blank if you feel you’re not informed enough to choose.

This has been quite a race… but the negative ads are terrible. You definitely can’t learn about the candidates stance on anything from those.

  7. I could not agree with you more! I always base my voting choice on moral issues. My friends say I’m naive. I trust God with the future of our country and always vote based on who would hold up the biblical values we are soooo lacking! I don’t depend on gov’t to pad my wallet…I depend on God. So, while “taxes” is a hot button on the ticket…..I look for who will not lead our country astray!

right on, lady! they interviewed someone on NPR who said he liked to idea of having a husband/wife team from Alaska who would be president and VP. good grief…

  9. I was so alarmed to hear Howard Stern’s interviews of people saying they were voting for Obama because of his Pro Life views, and Palin for VP…..very sad, alarming, upsetting….goodness!

You are one of the few people with whom I differ but still am 100% comfortable talking to you about politics. I am so tired of this and ready for it to be over – I can’t stand one more nasty slam from either side, or worse, having that heartbreak-y feeling when I talk with someone I realize has done nothing but watch commercials to decide how to vote.
