What I’m Into

For several months I have been reading Mary’s monthly recaps of What I’m Into and thought it was fun. So this month I am giving it a try. Whatcha think?

August went by in a blur. We took a major road trip to Florida which I am going to write about all week because it deserves so. many. posts. I had a wedding and a wedding shower. Apparently love is in the air. And we ended the month celebrating my dad’s birthday (Happy 64th Dad!!!) at Michigan Adventure. Summer might be fleeting but we are squeezing every last second out of it.

What I’m Reading:

AugustReading

I used to be a crazy reader until I developed my little internet habit which coincided with an obsession with lots of TV show. Since we ditched cable and I have ben scaling back on all the social media I have rediscovered how much I love reading. Oh novels. How I have missed you.

The Hypnotist’s Love Story: I picked this up at the library on a whim when I was looking for a vacation read. What Alice Forgot was one of my favorite books from last year and so I thought I might love another book by the same author. I was not disappointed. Her next book The Husband’s Secret is at the top of my “must read” list.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette: Am I the only one that kept hearing about this book all summer long? It seemed like the perfect vacation read for the trip to Florida and my awesome friend Marilyn found it on sale at the library and gifted it my way. What a fun read. Heavier than chick lit, but not much this book was so much fun to read. I couldn’t put it down.

The Night Circus: My friend Marilyn also recommended this book. I couldn’t put this one down either but it is not a light read. It is actually quite heady. I found myself captivated by the characters and loved the dream like nature of the book. Definitely recommending this one.

Sharp Objects: You have read Gone Girl right? This was like the hottest book last summer. I decided to see what else Gillian Flynn had to offer. This book was a little dark for me. I mean Gone Girl is dark, but this one was a d. a. r. k. I think I would say I still liked it but I needed some fluff after I finished.

What I’m Watching:

I have mentioned that we got rid of cable a few times and that we are now watching series one at a time. In August I finally started watching The Office. So late to the game with this one, but I am in love. We are in season 3 and I just keep falling more and more in love with this show.

In other “clearly I missed the boat on this series” show news, I have also started watching How I Met Your Mother. Clearly this show isn’t rocket science, but it makes me giggle. Right now I am almost done with season 2.

We gave Mad Men a try, but that seems like more of a winter show? It was a little dark and we just didn’t need dark this summer. Except that we also watched Deathly Hollows Part 1 and 2. So apparently darkness is all relative.

What I’m Listening To:

Well when the kids are in control it is a steady rotation of Selena Gomez, Treasure by Bruno Mars and all things Kelly Clarkson. And I am just trying to be quick enough on the trigger to avoid all things Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

We love Pink in our house despite the fact that a lot of her songs need a lot of editing to be safe for children. We only allow the kids to listen to the more appropriate ones and save the rest for when little ears aren’t around. Her new song True Love is the WORST depiction of true love ever. But darn it if it isn’t an awesome song. Still I could not have been more proud of my Hannah who asked us to turn the channel because it was “inappropriate” when we accidentally didn’t edit in time.

What I’m Loving:

First off that my kids are back in school. Because mama needed some routine again in her life. Can I get an Amen???

Taking part in a Labor Day grill off and eating all of the amazing creations. Ryan didn’t come away a winner but my sister in law came away with the third place title. I have been eating everything in sight this summer so I am back on the Whole 30 eating plan this week. I felt so much better the last time I did it and must admit my energy level has been down with all the overeating.

That the camo pants I splurged on last year from Gap are still all the rage this fall. I think they will be getting a lot of use again this year.

I keep buying boxes of these Stretch Island Fruit Chews “for the kids”. I cannot quit eating them.

What I’m Blogging:

I didn’t blog much in August. Here is the reason why: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder. I am feeling much more like myself these days and I am hoping getting back to proper eating and exercise will help even more.

  1. I totally just added Where’d You Go, Bernadette to my Amazon order. Saw you reading it and heard about it online everywhere. Now that the kiddos are back in school I have more ME time to read. Thanks for the recommendations Jill!

  2. I am reading the Night Circus right now and it’s SOOOO good. Love it.

Have you given up your anti-laugh-track existence? Season 2 is totally the best of HIMYM.

  3. I am pleased to meet another person who consistently misses the bandwagon! If there was a word for that, I think it would be post-hipster. You have such a treat ahead with The Office! I started going through 30 Rock right after the season finale and I just started reading Harry Potter this summer. So there’s my thing.

So fun that you’re linking up with Leigh for the first time! Welcome. :)

    • I LOVE 30 Rock. One of our faves!! Where are you in Harry Potter? We are such big fans! Did you see all my posts about Universal’s Harry Potter? It was amazing!!

  4. We just started watching House of Cards on Netflix and we’re enjoying it. Started Orange is the New Black but it started getting too dark for me (which is definitely all relative for us, too, as we’d just finished up Mad Men and Walking Dead!)

  5. I loved The Night Circus! It is definitely not a light read, and I had a few friends tell me they didn’t understand why I liked it. I need to pick up Sharp Objects…Gone Girl was also a favorite of mine.

  6. Well, I did not love the Night Circus. But I still trust you and just added the Bernadette and Alice books to my to-read list!

  7. Where’d You Go, Bernadette? finally came in at the library for me. I’m so looking forward to reading it. LOVED The Night Circus. I’m curious about what the author will write next. I laughed at your “darkness is relative” comment. Indeed.

Thanks for linking up with What I’m Into!
