Lily is seven today. Holy cow, how the heck did that happen? So it is only fitting that I am reviewing this magazine in her honor. You see, Lily is a lover of learning. She gets excited for school. She is always checking out learning books at the library (this week we are revisiting her fascination with sharks…again…). Her favorite TV show is How It’s Made on the science channel. And life is filled with the gears in her brain working as she spits out facts to us. Case in point: tonight she told me we really need more plants in the house because they use the bad air in our house and give us back good air. She paused and said, “Actually if you think about it, we are like plants to plants. Because we take their bad air and give them good air.” I am not even sure how she started thinking about this since I know for a fact they aren’t learning about it in school right now. But that girl’s brain is always in overdrive. It isn’t cool when your seven year old is probably smarter than you.
So when Mom Central asked for reviewers of Mad Science’ KNOW magazine, I knew it would be a hit in our house. I don’t know if your kids are like my kids, but my kids LOVE getting mail. And it just doesn’t happen very often. They also get really excited when the UPS or Fed Ex guy shows up at the house with a product to review until they find out it is nothing they would enjoy and then I get a rousing chorus of “Awww mom, why don’t you ever review anything WE would like.” So Lily, this one is for you. Happy Birthday.
KNOW magazine is a science magazine for 6-9 year olds. Since my daughter has not yet caught onto the fact that it isn’t cool for girls to like science (and let me be clear as a biology major I am thrilled she hasn’t been told that yet. Hopefully she never will.), she will absolutely love this magazine. It comes every other month (MAIL!!) and covers all sorts of science topics like dinosaurs and animals, the solar system and the human body. Oh and Lily’s personal favorite: fascinating scientists, cool facts, latest discoveries, and newest inventions. The girl has an invention book where she writes down her thoughts and has actually come up with some brilliant ones if only someone else hadn’t thought of it first. Like glow in the dark pacifiers so mommy isn’t down on her hands and knees in the middle of the night searching for one as Silas cries. Seriously, brilliant.
Here is the awesome part. It is free of advertising and 100% satisfaction guaranteed. If it doesn’t live up to your expectations, you get a full refund. Want to try it before you buy it, check out this free sample issue and see the quality for yourself. I think this would make a great gift that they can enjoy all year long. Perfect idea for grandparents instead of adding to the stuff cluttering up your house. I am seriously drowning in toys over here. A one year subscription (6 issues) can be purchased for $26. It is a tiny bit pricey for six issues, but it is actually pretty comparable to other kid’s magazines. Not sure why kid’s magazines are more expensive than adult ones. But either way, we just save them and read them over and over almost like a book.
Also, you can sign up to win a subscription to KNOW. Five moms will be selected at random, by Mom Central to receive a year-long subscription with enough science experiments, news, and articles to keep your child excited about science all year long.
So Happy Birthday to my little scientist. You will get a whole post dedicated to you tomorrow, cause one just isn’t enough. I love you!!
I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Mad Science and received the products necessary to facilitate my review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.
