The Final Step in Housewifedom

I am getting a minivan. There I said it. I am going to be the owner, driver, commander of a minivan. Minivan, people. When did this happen? I am young. I am hip. I am cool. How is it that I will be driving a minivan and not a cute little Volkswagaon convertible? And where did these kids come from? (That was rhetorical and hypothetical. I am fairly familiar with the birds and the bees. When a man and a woman love each other very much….)

I used to mock those who drove minivans. I used to swear I would NEVAH own a minivan. Cause minivans are for the lame. Then I had kids. And drove a minivan with them. Glory Hallelujah!!

The sliding doors, the cargo room, the cup holders, the DVD system!!! Oh my word people, it is like a home on wheels. A lame, lame home on wheels….(sigh)

  1. well, if you HAVE to mini van, you’re sure doing it right! you’ve got all the nice extras…and you’re still hip! just don’t put any of those window decals with calvin urinating on anything! that’s going toooooo far!

  2. Honey, I feel you. We got one in December. We’d been looking for an SUV with a third row of seats, and none of them were roomy enough without being totally ginormous, and finally my husband said, “You know, they make the car we need, and it’s a minivan.”

And it is awesome! We got all the ringadings, and I wouldn’t part with any of them!

  3. We’ve been debating the same issue. baby #2 is on the way and that means baby #1 can’t sit in the middle anymore. Which means he’ll be kicking the back of our seats in our less than roomy Grand Cherokee. A car may work, but it’d have to be one big car, so as much as I hate the idea, it may just be a minivan. :-P

  4. You’ve come to the dark side :). I was just like you, but then I got pregnant with Baby #3 and had limited options. You’ll grow to love it!

  5. Sorry, but I still mock people in mini-vans…whether or not I think their blog rocks…

  6. I am with ya sista! I too had to buy a mini van. We bought a Honda Odyssey back in June of this year. Our VW was totaled…boo hoo. Anyway, I will quote from their commercial …”RESPECT THE VAN!” That is all ya gotta say……

  7. I’ve had my van for 6 years and I’m STILL occasionally shocked that I’m driving it. I went from a cute sporty 2 door with a sunroof to a mini-van… I should have at least driven a transitional vehicle first, like an Accord or something. Welcome to the club:)

  8. We just went from 1 kid to 2 & we had a VW Jetta. Not enough room for the carseat & extras, so we had to get a bigger vehicle too. My husband was dead-set against a minivan, so we got a pathfinder instead. Other than the way the doors open I think they’re pretty much the same thing, but I LOVE IT!

  9. haha! i used to feel the same way.

and then we had our son.

and i found myself recently ASKING my husband if our next car could be a minivan.

    gah!

I used to think that a minivan was the final step, but now I know that Suburbans are the final step. Just add a couple more kids and you’ll be begging for one =)

  11. Congratulations! I love my minivan. I just wish ours had double sliding doors!

  12. I’ve had two minivans and been in them for 12 years. It’s only been in the last 2 years that I have felt the urge to shake the minivan image. But first, I have to shake a couple of kids into college!

  14. We got rid of my Trailblazer and got a Honda minivan in May. It’s very comfortable and roomy. I used to feel the same way about owning a minivan, but they just make your life so much easier. You will see!!

  15. Oh, I feel your pain. We are THIS close to being able to get rid of ours! Once the car seats are gone…. I did suggest a limo to my sweetie, one with a sound proof window between us and the kids!

Oh dear – you know I love you but, I might be making some comments about the minivan.

  17. I can’t wait to get a minivan. My civic is a little small for a carseat and an 11 year old.

  18. what-evah. you are going to looks SOO HAWT in a minivan! can we call it an MV? that sounds cooler! you should totally get a Toyota, according to my hubby. :)

I have mixed emotions about you getting a minivan. And I’ll tell you, because I know my emotions are a big part of your automotive purchasing decisions. I’m excited for you that you will be able to drive for field trips, and fit in with the other moms at drop off. And for your mom so you don’t have to keep borrowing hers. But the ranks of us driving our children around in cars is dwindling quickly, and I don’t want to be left all alone…

  24. I have a feeling this will be me, too, someday. in the meantime, I found myself hiding in a house made of pumpkins this weekend, crouched down below my propped-up son while someone else took pictures of him and another baby. and I had to think… “when did this happen?” like you did with your minivan (except for the hip and cool part… I’m young, but decidedly dorky). so I feel you.

  25. ha ha ha ha! I’m actually kinda looking forward to the day I get a minivan… don’t ask, I’m not sure why. I totally love my subaru wagon, but it will not last me forever (hi, just turned over 180k!). This week while visiting my friends I got to drive their minivan. It was different. I loved my little subaru when I got off the plane!
But maybe I don’t mind so much since I grew up in a full size Dodge van. And drove it all through high school! ;) You drive one of those things, you can drive anything!

  27. I swore I’d never be a minivan mom. Then my husband bought a minivan. Ours didn’t have the dvd player, but I miss having the van now. If only b/c in the minivan, the kids are not within reaching distance of each other.

  28. Once you go van, you never go back….until your kids can do their own seatbelts and you suddenly have a desire to feel “cool” again.
