The Cure for Summer Brain Drain (plus a GIVEAWAY)

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

So we are a few weeks into summer. And we are at a record low “I’m bored” whines. So WIN for me. That being said, we have hardly been home to BE bored and there is still a LOT of summer left. So I am holding off on that “mother of the year” sash for a little longer.

I like to keep the balance between keeping my kids busy enough to not drive me crazy, but not so busy that they are constantly exhausted and then…well driving me crazy. I also don’t like to have a summer where my kids completely shut off their brain. So we do library reading programs, hit a few museums and this summer, Summer Brain Games!!

summer brain games

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is one of our favorite “family field trip” destinations and this summer they are offering an awesome free online science program that will keep kids learning this summer and prevent the “summer brain drain.”

Did you know that research shows that kids can lose one to three months of learning over the summer? There are many ways to combat it, but since I found the Summer Brain Games it is one of my favorite!

Each week you get an online kit via email which features an experiment or science challenge that can easily be performed at home with kids of all ages, with parent supervision of course. I downloaded the whole kit this weekend and did a few experiments with my kids. We had a lot of fun and little do my kids know, they learned a lot too.

yes my child is out in our yard midday in her pajamas……

First we made a pinhole viewer out of a shoebox, wax paper and aluminum foil. VERY MacGyver of us. When we looked through our creation, everything we saw was upside down. It took ten minutes max to make and we had so much fun exploring our backyard. (I would amend the directions a bit to not make the holes very big. I made mine like the instructions said and it let way too much light in).

Next we used some popsicle sticks and tape to design “Super Stable Structures”. Except our plan to make them stable with molding clay failed miserable when we couldn’t get things to stick together. So their stability was pretty poor. But we laughed our way through our failure. And we used the left over popsicle sticks to make actual popsicles. So #winning!!

I can’t wait to see what other activities the summer has in store for us. Head over and register for this free program. Best part? You will get pass to come to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry for free this summer!!!!

I am so excited to be able to offer a Family Four Pack (value $76.00), which includes tickets to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Seems like life gets soooo caught up in the complicated that we forget how fun simple can be: bike riding, playing board games, sitting at a beach, looking at stars through the telescope…seems like those are always the times when we laugh together the most. :)
