A year ago I worked with Champions For Kids in a project to combat childhood hunger. It is a cause which our family has been passionate about for years in our work with Kids Food Basket, a local charity that seeks to end childhood hunger in our community.
Childhood hunger has been an easy cause for our family to get behind. To be honest, I am not sure my kids grasp that there are children who go hungry in their community. How can they when we can barely shut our fridge, freezer and cupboards for all the food inside? But we try to talk about it regularly and help them understand that it is a very real issue for kids just like them. 16 million children live in poverty in our country and I’d like to think we are doing our part to help them get access to nutritious foods.
This year, I am so excited to be partnering again with Champions For Kids, joined by Emerald, Dole, and Kellogg Company, for a back to school project called Simple Giving. The best part? It is super easy for you to participate too.
You can head to your local Walmart store where you will find bins to collect back-to-school snack foods now through August 18. These snack items will be donated to local school districts to directly help kids in need of a nutritious snack during and after school. Such a simple way for you to make a difference in your local community.
I took my kiddos and headed out to our local Walmart to pick up some snacks to donate. Unfortunately our local Walmart hadn’t put the bins out yet, but the employee I spoke to assured me they would be out soon. Hopefully you will have better luck at your local store. You can find a list of participating stores on their website. If your Walmart store is participating, simply purchase foods and place them in the purple donation bins at the front of the store after checkout.
I will also be participating in a Twitter party on Monday to help spread the word about Simple Giving and other ways to give back in your community. I’d love for you to join me at 1pm (EST) following the hashtag #SIMPLEGiving. You can find more details and RSVP here. (Five prizes will be given to randomly selected participants who answer the trivia questions correctly. Each prize includes a $50 Walmart gift card.)
How do you give back with your kids?
