Prayers of a Child

I love my hubby for a whole host of reasons, but one of my favorite things he does is pray over our children. I think I have shared this before, but on their birthdays he picks out a verse for them and prays it over them all year long. When the kids are little, he does it while they sleep, but now that the girls have gotten older he prays with them while they are awake. It is one of their favorite things.

When we went on our road trip last week we left close to bed time for the first leg of the trip hoping we could get some of the drive under our belt while the kids were sleeping. As it was getting dark, Lily told her daddy he needed to do their prayers before they went to sleep. So the hubby proceeded to pray over each of the kids.

When he had finished, Lily said, “Now I need to pray for you guys cause the rest of us got prayers and you didn’t”. What followed was truly one of the highlights of all my years of parenting. She thanked God for us in general, but then she started thanking God for things she loved about us specifically. And she thanked God that he had made us her parents. It was the most touching thing and totally transparent and from her heart. I truly wish I would have taped it so I could rewind it and listen to it over and over. Especially for those times where I am not feeling at all like I am up to the task of being her mom. What a priceless gift she gave me.

  3. That is so cool, sometimes it is nice to know we aren’t screwing and they do kinda like us. :)
We have always prayed over our kids too. My 16 year old loves it when we do pray, but my 14 year old won’t go to bed unless we have prayed with him.
I really love the idea of choosing a verse. It’s never to late to start right? Especially since my oldest only has 2 more years at home. Ok back in panic mode…gotta go.

  6. We always pray with the kids at bedtime, but I might just have to start picking a verse too. Both of my children have created their own prayers from time to time to thank God for various things and us. It’s so touching to hear them. Reading what you wrote reminded me and touched my heart this morning.

Aren’t kids the BEST!!! Everything they say comes from the deepest parts of their soul and what your husband gives them in prayers everyday will only make their lives and their faith strong..You are truly blessed.
