Sorry I went off the grid a bit. Summer time is time for family and travel and sunshine and keeping the computer closed. So I have been doing that. But I have missed you and the siren call of the blog always calls me back again. And when I last blogged I promised you a health update so for those who are interested, I wanted to give you one.
Back in May, at the advice of my naturopath, I decided to stop eating gluten and dairy and see if I could heal some of my symptoms. The main one was exhaustion and fatigue (beyond just normal stay at home mom of 3 kiddos stuff), headaches, blurry vision, hormone related mood swings and who knows what else.
I actually resisted going gluten-free for a few years while I watched many people around me do so. It seemed like the latest diet fad. And everyone who I knew who was eating a gluten-free diet was doing so because of tummy symptoms. I have never had any tummy problems. So it just seemed like it was not for me.
But it only took a couple of weeks for me to see a radical difference. I no longer struggled to get out of bed in the morning. Gone were my 1 1/2 daily naps (which I know sounds luxurious but it was crippling). I haven’t had any of my blurry vision/ double vision episodes. But the best part is all the hormonal stuff is done. The mood swings, the PMS and the awful anxiety that was coming every few cycles. It was a nightmare.
I was officially diagnosed with adrenal fatigue. So I have been on supplements (which I kind of stink at taking) that are also helping my body heal. And it is healing. Clearly. But I know there are a few kinks we need to work out.
I still think there are some foods that are affecting me. Some days I just feel weary again for no apparent reason. I recently started the process of doing some allergy testing to see what might be the problem. If there has anything I have learned in the last few years, healthy often comes back to food.
I am still regularly checking in with my naturopath until we reach optimal health. I am thrilled with how far we have come. Hopefully we can tweak a few things and I will be close to 100% soon.
How have you been?
