Music Monday- Harry Connick Jr. (and a GIVEAWAY!!)

record  Way back in the dark ages of this blog I used to do a weekly post of artists that I loved. I guess I ran out or something cause I just stopped doing it. But One2One Network recently gave me an opportunity to review the new Harry Connick Jr. CD so I thought I would share my thought on a Monday thereby temporarily reviving Music Mondays. Can you stand the excitement???

I discovered Harry Connick Jr. back in high school when he released his Blue Light, Red Light (affiliate link) CD. There was a song on it titled “Jill” so I was instantly smitten. Of course it was written for his wife who I happen to have a ton in common with. She was a Victoria Secret model back when the catalog first came out. So you of course see the similarities….in our names. Frankly he could have had a song called “Prudence” and I would have been in love. The man can sing.

Then he seemed to stop making music in order to do movies. Which I can’t complain about because usually he was equally dreamy on stage (Hope Floats anyone?) except in that movie Copycat. Did anyone see that because I am not a fan of Mr. Connick playing deranged killers. That movie was disturbing and if I recall I had many a nightmare and a horrible night’s sleep after watching it.

Well Harry is back to his roots in music and none to soon. I missed him, didn’t you? On September 22 he released his latest album, Your Songs (affiliate link). It is a collection of standards including a few of my favorites like “The Way You Look Tonight” and “Smile.”

I think the album is a bit of a mixed bag. Harry’s voice and orchestrations are perfect for classics, but when he tackles covers like Billy Joel and Elton John I feel like it comes across a bit like elevator music. I just don’t think you mess with Billy Joel. And it definitely has more of an easy listening feel than some of his past albums which lean more towards jazz. But his voice….it is still spectacular and oozes romance. I am just not a fan of all the arrangements.

That being said, it is nice background music when you are cleaning the house or when you are running your 15th errand of the day (am I the only one living out of my car lately?) . You want a chance to check out the new Harry Connick CD? Leave a comment letting me know your favorite song off his new album. I will pick a winner next Monday, Oct (???) 4th. Here is the tracklist:

All The Way (Frank Sinatra)
Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel)
Can’t Help Falling In Love With You (Elvis Presley)
And I Love Her (The Beatles)
(They Long To Be) Close To You (The Carpenters)
Besame Mucho
The Way You Look Tonight
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack)
Your Song (Elton John)
Some Enchanted Evening
And I Love You So (Don McLean)
Who Can I Turn To? (Tony Bennett)
Smile (Charlie Chaplin)
Mona Lisa (Nat King Cole)

  3. And I Love Her…
This post title reminded me of a few Christmases ago; I mentioned to my mom that I’d like the Harry Connick Jr. Christmas CD. After all the presents were opened, she told me that she’d looked several places without being able to find the Ray Conniff Singers Christmas CD that I’d wanted…thank goodness she didn’t find it! :)

My daughter is now a fan as well, after growing up listening to his Christmas albums year after year, she is a huge fan of his old time big band tunes.

Oh, Harry. I have been in love with him since high school. My sister took me to see him in concert for my birthday one year, and O. My. That man played everything on the stage, even things that weren’t instruments. My favorite song of all time is Barkley Square (maybe 21?). I loved his kids album too. But my fave new one is The Way You Look Tonight, only cuz I got a free download.
    Oh, Harry.

  14. Anything!!! He could sing the phone book to me. I basically wanted to comment to share my Harry story. He came into Blind Charlies in Pound Ridge, NY with his daughters and father-in-law for breakfast the morning after Thanksgiving while I was there with my visiting family. Very cool.

  15. I love Harry too, but I have to agree with you. Still good, but just not the same. He was on TV over here (in Australia), and he performed ‘Just the Way You Are’. It kind of left me all ‘meh’ instead of all ‘squeeeeee!’

  16. I really like Harry Connick, Jr., this CD sounds like it’s another GREAT!!! CD I think all of his music is wonderful. I love the way he sing the older songs that Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett did. I also like the songs ” Close to You “by the Carpenters and ” Your Song ” by Billy Joel.
