Music Monday- Five for Fighting

record Five for Fighting is almost like a soundtrack for our family over the past several years. It started with “Superman” which my hubby and Lily loved. Then they discovered “100 Years” which the hubby would dance to in the living room with Lily in one arm and Hannah in the other. “The Riddle” and “” followed as songs the girls begged to listen to and the hubby danced with them to. Something about this guy’s voice and songwriting has captivated our family.

It could be that the name of the band alludes to the amount of minutes a hockey player gets in a penalty for fighting. Hockey in our house is kind of like “you had me at hello.” But it is also his gift for writing lyrics that are so relatable and a voice that I could listen to for days. Oh and the piano. There is something about a man and a piano that I just can’t resist.

Five for Fighting released their new album Slice on October 12th. And like his previous efforts, it does not disappoint. John Ondrasik, aka Five for Fighting, calls this album a diary, or a blog, in which Ondrasik speaks his mind about current issues, experiences and sentiments, while setting those thoughts to piano, bass and drums. Hello!! He said blog. He set a blog to music. That is like my DREAM!!!

This album is filled with songs about really profound topics like 9/11 and lighter fares like Slice which reminisces about a simpler time (with another shout out to blogging, Holla!!) . It feels a bit heavier than his previous songs that have gotten a lot of radio play, but somehow he pulls off a heavier feel without making the listener feel like they are weighed down. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Seriously, if you like what Five For Fighting has done in the past you will love this album. And if you haven’t yet discovered him, you really should check him out.

*Disclosure: I was not compensated financially for this review. I was provided with a copy of the CD for review purposes by One2One Network. The opinions regarding the album are all mine.
