Making a List and Checking It Twice- Works For Me Wednesday

Christmas list

The advent of deal sites has been awesome for my holiday shopping. All year long when a good deal would appear I would buy it. Ok so possibly TOO often when a good deal would appear. But the good news is I had a nice little stash of Christmas presents built up this year.

Normally I am not one of those people who shops all year long. Normally I am more of a order everything I want to buy the first week in December kind of person. But this year the gifts seem to be trickling in. Combine that with the fact that I kept discovering hiding places where I kept my stash from the year and I was overwhelmingly confused with what I had gotten for who and if it was all even.

Side note: My husband thinks I am insane because I try really hard to spend the same amount on each kid. I say he is an only child who doesn’t know anything about not scarring children with siblings for life. What say you?

So this year I got all nerdy and made out a spreadsheet for each person on my list. If I had the present in hand, it was written in their column in black. If I had ordered the present or had an idea for a present it went in italics. If the person is done being purchased for, their column turns red.

Dude. I am a nerd.

But either way it is keeping me so much more sane. I also may or may not have a list for stocking stuffers to keep those even as well. We need not discuss the complicated system I use to keep track of the Christmas cards I send and receive. It would scare you.

How to you keep track of your Christmas shopping? Are you done yet?

  1. I think you are an awesome nerd! ;) Sadly, I am waaaay behind on my Christmas shopping this year. I have cool Cars sleeping bags for my boys and that is about it so far. :P
Just tonight I made my husband email his family with the annual “what do you want for Christmas” list. I swear they are weird, I could never do that with my family, but they seem to like it so whatever works!
And I have a Christmas card list that goes from year to year… I”m not sure you want to hear about my system either! ;)

I LOVE IT!!! I do something very similar to you with a spreadsheet. I am done shopping and tend to pick up things through out the year, especially for my kids. My parents were very particular about being completely equal between their 4 children and I want to do the same for mine. Although my mom did get kind of crazy at one point making sure that we had the EXACT number of presents to open (to the point of wrapping like 6 shirts together). :oP

I do it the same way, down to the stocking stuffer list:). I don’t go by how much I spend, though, I go by how many presents each kid has. That will probably change when they are older and want more expensive things, and know how much things cost!

  5. I think you are completely sane. I do the same math calculation to keep everyone equal. I dont want THIS to be the thing that ruins my relationship with my children, or among them.

In the pre-computer days my mother kept a list in her desk drawer and let’s just say a snoopy only child left at home one afternoon found said list and knew what she was getting for Christmas that year and the next and maybe even the one after that.

So just be careful becuase if you are nerdy, chances are good one of your kids could grow up to be nerdy too and realize, hey she makes lists for EVERYTHING else, why wouldnt there be a Christmas list too.

    Just sayin. :)
