I have never been much of a worrier. I have always been more of a take things as they come kind of girl.
The thing about worrying is, even the best non- worrier has her work cut out for her when she has kids. How does one not worry when the news is full of horrible stories? Avoiding the news doesn’t even work because there is still daily life. Last week I got on Facebook to see announcements about cancer, young deaths, miscarriages and sudden serious illnesses. It was enough to make my head spin.
So how does a mom keep the worries at bay while at the same time fiercely loving her family? For me, the answer is easy. I pray a lot and I apologize often.
That may seem a weird thing to say, apologizing often, but hear me out.
I am not a perfect mom. Some days I am so far from it, it is astounding. But my worst parenting moments are the ones when I dig in my heels and become like a child myself. Please tell me you know what I am talking about.
I think the only way to not obsess over what might happen to my kids is to know I end every day with my “account” in good order. Knowing there are not things unsaid, knowing I have modeled humility, knowing that at the end of the day, despite all my failings, I am still the best mom I can be. So that if something awful happened I could rest in that.
