I'm Flying…Again

Do you know who this is? She is either a genius or tool of Satan. I have been riding on the fence on that genius/Satan thing for a few years now. I try her, then she starts to frustrate me with her demands for a clean sink and needing to wear my shoes in my house and her harping at me to go to bed at 10 pm. Yeah, wouldn’t that be nice?

But, I have been feeling like the “home” in homemaker has been falling by the wayside so I am back on the Flylady wagon. I have discovered that she is slightly less annoying than before with a little less email clutter (although enough with the testimonials-I get it, you’re fabulous). And my house is staying relatively clean. So much so that when people come over I don’t have to do a mad dash to stash everything. And I will admit, it is nice to wake up to no dishes in the sink.

Still, you know those compliments that are totally meant to be compliments, but somewhere in there is a tiny bit of an insult. Like, “Wow, you look amazing.” (cause you normally look like something the cat dragged home. Or “Holy cow, you have lost some weight!” (cause before you could have just slapped Goodyear on the side of you and called it a day).

Well today I got a few, “Wow, your house looks amazing.” Which leads me to believe people have previously believed we were living in a filth hole. Or that I was sitting around eating bon-bons all day instead of tending to the house. It is more likely I was up to my eyeballs in coupons trying to score a good CVS deal or trying to track down my long lost childhood friend on Facebook. Actually some days it takes all that I have just to keep up with the dishwasher and the laundry (the cycle NEVER ends) with a pause here and there to yell at the kids. And by yell, I mean gently and lovingly remind them that, “YOU DO NOT SIT ON YOUR SISTER!!”

But now with my fantastic system in place, I expect my house to remain clean for a good 4 days until I have grown again frustrated with that purple mad woman and let it go back to its usual sub par state of cleanliness. So frankly, you have a 4 day window in which to come over unannounced. After that you best call first so I can throw all the dirty dishes into the guest room.

Comments

  1. I have heard so much about this Flylady, but I doubt I’ll ever join the gang… my house isn’t big enough to put stuff away so I always have piles and that keeps it from feeling “clean” although it is sanitary. And yes, I do get rid of stuff periodically! Good luck with more than 4 days!
(and I don’t wear shoes in the house ever, it’s a rule!)

  2. You know I was actually thinking about jumping on the fly wagon again myself… or at least using some of her ideas like a weekly cleaning routine and picking up before I go to bed. I’ve gotta change something, and she defines exactly how I would do it.

  3. I love FlyLady!!! In fact on of my friends and I are starting a flylady accountability site. You can go there to get your kick in the pants instead of getting all those emails. I will probably be up today. I will announce the site address on my own blog! I hope you will come visit Kelly and I over there!!

  4. I have been putting off signing up again because of the emails, and just the general overwhelming-ness of keeping my house in order every stinkin’ day.. every few days, yes, but that whole every day thing… while I love the routines, I also hate them. Ugh. I have Flylady issues.

I am like you to a certain extent. I have been on again off again Flybaby. I think that there are just too many rules to follow. I know, I know, babysteps and all.
There are some VERY valuable things I learned from FlyLady. I have only done some of her routines, but it makes a huge difference in how my day goes. If I pick out clothes the night before–the whole outfit!, and fix my hair and face in the morning, then I feel more ready for the day. I feel good about myself and that I deserve to have a clean house. I was doing it for my hubby or kids, not me. I do try to organize and use her routines, but I find that I require much more flexibility in my system. ~ I now wash my sheets once a week, either Mon or Tues. ~ I don’t let my clothes sit in the washer or dryer for a long time. ~ It only takes a few minutes to get it done. I still have big mountains in my mind but she has helped me to pick those apart and make them more manageable. Like go spend 15 minutes taking out the long sleeve shirts and putting in short sleeves. Thats all. (What am I talking about…we still needed the long sleeves here yesterday. In MAY! what do I expect … its Kansas) Then tomorrow go do the pants/shorts switch. Then underbed cleanout next day. etc…. I don’t follow the whole system, because it just doesn’t fit my life, but I LOVE a few of the things I’ve learned. I don’t follow the zone on the calendar, but have used the detailed cleaning lists. I go more upstairs downstairs rather than the zone/room calendar week. If my downstairs is great, then I do upstairs. Probably not the best system, so I will gladly take comments/suggestions. I am always open for this kind of discussion.
Have you had that giveaway of the plaque of a name written in a scripture? I really want one. I would like for you to contact me about ordering one, that is if I don’t win it! I want it for my prayer pal at church.

I think the longest I ever lasted with FlyLady was a whole week.

    1) I just don’t have the kind of schedule that remains constant enough to be able to do the same thing at the same time every day (the solid “routines” drove me nuts)

    2) Yeah, we don’t wear shoes in the house :-)

In the end, I just borrowed a few of her good ideas and unsubscribed from the group.

  7. I am a total slob and the Flylady scares the crap out of me. And I often get the “oh, it looks so nice in here” comment on the few occasions that i actually clean the house. Which i am about to do cause the MIL is coming to visit this weekend!!

  8. SAHMmy Says says:

I love flylady–but I never signed up for emails. I hear that puts a lot of people off. I have to draw the line on shoes in the house, though.
I prefer the Sidetracked Home Executives book/system–I believe flylady’s methods are loosely based on that.

  9. Ummm, I can’t do shoes all day in my house…..that would drive me bonkers! Sorry FlyLady! I’ll happily shine my sink…but I just can’t do the shoes. I do like waking up to a clean sink, but I’m not too big into that much structure….the thought of having to be that structured stresses me out!

  10. Ha! My SIL commented before me! Love it!

  11. I, too, have a love/hate relationship with FLYLADY. Right now I’m getting the emails. What has helped me the most in the system is the Control Journal. It has helped me to think about a basic schedule. I can’t survive without the Holiday Control Journal. It gets me ready for the Christmas season. I keep my gift list in it from years past. Finally I know that I won’t re-give the same item.
