I Love the 80s

saltnpep.jpgI read over at GoodyBlog today that the Cabbage Patch kid doll turns 25 today. Man, these things were the must-have toy of my childhood. I actually had 2. Marvin Cy came free with our Colecovision which was the poor-man’s Atari. Then I got Paula Holly, who was a preemie, for Christmas. Our neighbors had tons of them and a wardrobe to match.  Now they are coming back in vogue and my daughter has one. I love that all these throwback toys are coming back. I get to re-experience my youth with my own children. She loves Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony, all that is missing is a Monchichi.

What I don’t love is that my worship team at church is made up of a bunch of 12 year olds (not really, but it seems like it) who were not born until the mid 80s and have no idea of all things cool and 80’s related. I mentioned last Sunday that while surfing the radio on the way to church I came across “Push It” by Salt ‘N’ Pepa and felt that it was unholy to listen to it on the way to church. I was met with blank stares and a “what is that?” I could have cried.

  1. It is sad about people not know some of the same cultural references. I talked about REM to my highschoolers when I taught a few years ago and they had no idea! It definitely is a turning point. It’s a good thing you have that fashionista thing to uplift you when you are down. I got nothing. :)
