Happy Birthday Lily

six   As I sit here contemplating the fact that Lily turns six this week, I am a bit paralyzed by the thought. Is it just me or is there something about six that just seems big? I mean it isn’t 1 or 13 or 16 or 18 so it doesn’t typically receive a lot of fanfare, but six seems to be some sort of turning point to little girl to big girl. Six is toothless grins, no training wheels, reading, full time school, making her own peanut butter sandwiches, and just around the corner from not wanting to hug her mom when I drop her off at school.

I seriously get choked up as I write that. As we prepare for baby #3 around here, I was talking to the girls about how they came into the world. Lily’s birth was not a pleasant one. Since it was my first I really didn’t know the difference, but now I know, it was not a good one. Back labor, three hours of pushing which ended in a forcep delivery, then swelling and pain like I haven’t experienced since. And that was with an epidural. Hannah’s birth was drug free and it was still less painful by a mile.

I have had two easy babies and pretty easy toddlers. But sometimes Lily challenges me as a mom. Mostly cause she is so darn like me. Don’t you hate that? The things I find most frustrating in parenting her are the things that bug me about myself. She is a big daily mirror into many of my shortcomings. But she is also beyond delightful. Seriously, I shouldn’t even try and paint her as difficult because I know what a difficulty child truly is. Lily is inquisitive and bright and has a lust for learning. She absorbs books and information like a sponge and I love the hard questions she asks and her unique perspectives on life.

As long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a mom and Lily made me one. For that any pain of labor or frustration in parenting is so worth it. I am so proud of the person she is becoming and the talents she is developing. As she gets older she is becoming such a helper to me and one of my favorite traits about her is her developing generosity. She loves to buy little gifts for her family and give money to those who need it. And she is such a lover of all things music whether it be piano lessons or singing loudly into her Dora microphone stand.

Ugh, as many parents do, I wish I could slow down time a bit, but we all know that isn’t possible. And so I celebrate another year gone by and look forward to the year ahead with excitement. Thanks for giving me 6 amazing years Lily and for making me a mommy. You are treasured and loved.

  1. I understand exactly what you mean. My son just turned 6 this summer. Now he is the baby; I doubt there will be anymore (unless God has a surprise blessing for us) and I found it incredibly difficult to come to terms with 6. There is nothing babyish about 6 – nothing.

Found your blog through a friend of a friend of a…blog hopping.

  2. Happy birthday to your little girl!

I had a similar experience with my two births—the first, I had an epidural, forceps and complications afterward (spinal headache—on my back for a week!). The second I went drug free and it was so much easier (birth and recovery).

  3. My youngest baby of three is turning 6 tomorrow, so I know how you feel. They grow up so fast, my oldest is turning 11 in November, how did THAT happen?!

I can’t even remember how I found your blog but I love it…my oldest turned 6 last April…I was in tears reading this entry as it is EXACTLY what I felt & how I feel about my little one, or not so little as the case maybe :)

Happy Birthday to your Lily – I’m sorry it’s a few days late! My 6-year-old will turn 7 in November – and I’m already in denial, lol.

My oldest was the most difficult birth as well – the 3 hours of pushing, ending in a forceps (vaccuum in our case) delivery sounds very familiar. ;)

I hope the birthday girl had a wonderful day!!
