Frugal Friday- Skype

frugal-friday-2-736462  Are you Skyping yet? Cause you should be. Skype is downloadable service that allows you to make free phone calls to any other Skyp-er anywhere in the world. Oh yeah baby, I said world. The catch is, they need Skype too, but since it is free, that should be an easy problem to solve. The only catch is they need high speed internet and so do you.

My favorite part of Skype is that you can make video conference calls. You need a laptop with a camera built in or a web cam, but web cams are actually quite inexpensive these days. We got ours for around $20. We first discovered the joy of Skype calls when the hubby and I took a trip to London for a week and were really missing the girls. Somehow it made us seem less far away. Now we are going to be using it to talk to my brother and sister in law and see her growing preggo belly. And so they can listen to Hannah say “Hello” loudly into the mic over and over and over again.

If you are paying for long distance on your landline or have a massive cell phone bill, consider Skype. And for more frugal tips, head over to Biblical Womanhood.

  1. Tokbox is great too.

Since my hubs moved to OR already, we find it useful. He can see me & I can hear his voice…since he doesn’t have a webcab.

We’re actually using these online services to hold huge conference calls. In fact we started an online bible study w/ people all over the world! Awesome, frugal idea.

  2. We love skype. We started using it years ago when we lived in Cuba and phone calls were over $.60 a minute. We don’t use it as much now because we have Vonage, but it is great when we want to call friends overseas.

  3. We also use Skype. We only use it for computer to computer calls but it is great because my son can see his Grandparents and talk to them more often than he can physically be in the same place with them.

Love this! D and I skyped while he was in Israel last summer (and I was VERY pregnant). And it’s been a great way to keep in touch with friends who have kids – it’s like sitting down to coffee in your living room (plus, you don’t have to walk around with a phone plastered to your ear).

  6. Skype was one of the 1st things we hooked up to when we moved here. It’s getting used quite often between here and MI. :)

  7. Thanks for the tip! Friends have been bugging us to do Skype and my parents have been bugging us for a webcam… I thought they were more expensive than that, so now I want to go shopping! :)

You could also consider using it for long distance phone calls, computer to land-line.

My husband and I were an ocean apart all pre-marriage, and I loved being able to call his cell and talk to him wherever he was, for just 2 cents a minute. Awesome!

Now that we’re married and live far from both side of the family, we use skype for our long distance service. When we cut unlimited long distance off the phone bill, the savings more than paid for high speed internet and skype.

Tell me, where else can you get unlimited long distance for $3 a month? Only skype.

  10. We love Skype too. My sister introduced us to it, and we’ve also used it with my in-laws and my best friend (all of whom are out of state).

But after Skyping once with my bff & her 4 kids…I’m fantasizing about meeting her for coffee, just the two of us…over Skype!

  11. I love Skype. My kids use it to webcam-chat with their daddy when he’s out of state – and it doesn’t cost a penny! BTW, I loved your Valentine’s post so much that I blogged about it in my new feature “Field Trip Friday”. Check it out!
