Frugal Friday- Is It Possible I Am Becoming a Hockey Fan?

frugalfridays.jpg So anyone who has read my profile might have taken note of the fact that my husband is quite the hockey fan. Some quick background. When I met my hubby I was rather taken with the fact that he wasn’t a big jock or a fanatical sports fan. I grew up with 2 of those (love ya dad and ad), dated many of them and just thought it would be nice to marry someone whose life didn’t revolve around whatever sport happened to be on ESPN at the moment. He liked hockey and watched it occasionally, but that was it. This is just another example of the bait and switch he pulled post marriage.

Suddenly he became a man who lived and breathed hockey. It started with the Detroit Red Wings, but it has begun to carry over into their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. This involves DVRing most Red Wings games, going to many Griffins games, checking various blogs and websites about his teams, and calling out “Go Red Wings” during our intimate moments (or maybe it was just “SCORE!”). In short, it has gotten out of control. And the hockey season is the longest one known to man. From pre-season to the Stanley Cup the season is 9 months long.

What could all this possibly do with Frugal Friday? Good question. I have finally found a way to make his hockey obsession work in my favor. I wrote beforeabout how we have an Aveda school in town. Well, I was tipped off by my good friend Big Binder that if you brought a ticket stub from any Griffins game you could get a free service at Douglas J Salon. Free!!

So a facial is $42. That’s actually the beauty school price. At an actual Aveda salon, it would run you over $100. When I got mine last night, FREE!! Cost of the ticket to Griffins game, around $15. There are always buy one, get one free coupons running around. It’s almost worth it to buy a ticket to the hockey game just for a discounted spa visit. This discovery could be the best thing that has ever happen to our marriage. Suddenly 9 months doesn’t seem so long. Not when that means 9 months of facials. I will have the best skin around.

How does that help my readers who live no where near here? Well, I found this deal in the hockey program. I never look in that thing. I did the other night and there was all sorts of discounts for restaurants and other services. So I guess the takeaway would be, keep your eyes peeled. Lately I feel like I have been finding coupons everywhere. And my hubby assures me almost all sports programs have deals in them, many involving some sort of promotion in exchange for a ticket stub. Probably not for a day at the spa, but you might be surprised at what you find in there.

Second takeaway, let your hubby be obsessed with whatever sport he wants…just make sure there is something in it for you :)

Comments

  1. interesting! i may have to start dumpster diving outside of the sports arenas!!

  2. I didn’t realize you were in GR. I was born there!

  3. I’m laughing at the bait and switch. I grew up in a 150 year old house that was beautiful; but that didn’t stop my dad from CONSTANTLY doing some type of home improvement project. Seriously, there was never a time when dust wasn’t flying or sanders buzzing. The projects were never quite done before the next one started.

When I got married, I said, “I have but one rule. Limit the home improvement stuff AND – you may not begin one until the last one is finished.” It took a few years, but with the help/influence of my Dad and some sort of middle age need to tear down walls setting in I look around and can count no less than four ‘in process’ projects. Ugh. Where can I get a coupon to fix that? :)

Even minor league teams have this. Our local minor league baseball team offers car wash deals and free kids meals at a burrito shop.

  5. Melonie (Momma & More) says:

I can’t decide what’s funnier – the post or the comment right before mine about the bait & switch. heehee

  6. A $15 facial? What a score!! I’m jealous!

  7. Get OUT! The best part is that we have two free tickets already!!

  8. That is a deal! I was visiting a friend who’s Grandma just passed away on Sunday afternoon so my hubby took our to girls to a hockey game. They LOVED it & there were lots of fun activities for the kids too – he tells me we’ll be going again soon!

  9. Nice! I am a little jealous about the free facial. OK, I’m really jealous. :o)
