Frugal Friday- Get Organized

frugalfridays.jpg  So I belong to a local Mom’s Club group that I love. One of the things we do is have a monthly “Frugal Group” organized by the ridiculously organized Big Binder. Our discussion this month was on getting organized.

How does organization help one be frugal? I am so glad you asked. I will tell you by way of a little story.

I like trying out new recipes. Sometimes fancy, complicated recipes. Sometimes recipes that have annoying ingredients that I know I will only use once. What you may not know about me is that I have a problem with recipes. That problem being, I can’t not follow one to the letter. Just thinking about veering off the recipe gives me the shakes (writing a blog makes you realize how weird you really are).

Anyway, this has led me to have some weird ingredients in my cupboard. So the other day, I decided to tackle the spices. I found 3 little jars of celery salt. All 3 of which had little to no celery salt used from them. This would not have happened if I had any clue what things I had in the cupboard before I went to the grocery store.

So this week when I made Greek Chicken, I checked through the cupboards before making out my shopping list. Lo and behold, there was some Kalamata olives in there that I had bought double of once before when making some sort of Greek dish. So, I didn’t waste money buying stuff I already have.

One could argue that I could just stop making dishes with weird ingredients or bravely omit and ingredient here and there in a recipe. To that I just put my fingers over my ears and sing loudly: LA, LA, LA, LA.

Anyway, to wrap things up (finally), this doesn’t just pay off in the kitchen. Ever get charged a late fee for a bill that got put in the wrong pile? Ever pay a fine on an overdue library book that got mixed in with your own? Ever paid full price cause you couldn’t find the right coupon even though you could have swore you just had one?….yeah, me neither. But if I had, I bet some organization might have helped my cause.

  1. I forgot to mention this when I was a frugal group on Monday….but a remedy for your spices: I have one. I went to the dollar store or big lots (I think it was big lots) and bought those really narrow baskets, and I put my spices in them according to type (italian spices such as basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary, and garlic) are all in one basket, and then I just slide the basket out depending on what I’m cooking. The baskets were 4 to a bunch for like $1.50, and fit easily on the shelf I keep all my spices on. My other tip, when buying those wierd spices you may not use again….because spices go bad after a year or 2 I buy the smallest container I can. I mostly shop at Penzy’s, so it isn’t hard to get the smaller containers and they are like half the price of a large container you’ll end up sitting around. I too have to follow the recipe’s to the T…so I’m right there with ya!

  2. hooray for trying weird new recipes! Whenever I get flak about having odd ingredients buried in the back of my cupboard, I claim that I *need* that can of coconut milk and those inari wrappers just in case the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and Japan stop by for lunch and they just can’t agree on what they want.

It could happen, you never know.

Good luck using up all that celery salt!

  3. You won a copy of Boo Humbug! Please send me your mailing addy. I sent you an email but wanted to make sure you knew.

Thanks for the linkage! I feel you on the spices–I have 5 opened jars of Cream of Tartar–all I use it for is Snickerdoodles, and now I have a recipe that doesn’t call for it at all! I did stop myself from buying Pumpkin Pie Spice today–good thing as I found 3 jars in my cupboard when I got home! Guess who’s organizing her spice shelf tomorrow morning?

  6. OOHHH!! I’m clapping my hands together. Time for a pantry challenge at your house! I’ll be over Sunday to take inventory of what you have and help you plan a menu for the week. I can’t WAIT. I live for this kind of stuff. I’ll bring my binder of recipes! It’s going to be soooo much fun…

Oh gosh, I feel bad, I am anything but frugal. I dont really look for deals, since most of the kids clothes are from Walmart or Target! I dont use coupons, cause Im too lazy, but I just try to keep the groceries at 100 bucks a week! I really enjoyed your blog, please stop by my blog if you can!
