Last year we had a babysitter who is an engineering major at the college down the street. With under 20% of engineering students being female I was so thrilled, a few weeks later, to hear Lily express an interest in pursing engineering as a career. Now she is only 11 and this week wants to be an interior designer, but I love anything that encourages my girls to think outside of the box of “traditionally female” careers.
Studies show that girls begin to lose interest in science, technology, engineering and math as early as eight. With my youngest girl being eight, this concerns me and I want to fight it at every turn. And while none of my kids have ever been boxed in by playing with only “girl” or ” boy” toys it still is hard to find toys that my girls love that encourage them in these important subjects.
Enter Goldiebox. They are determined to “un-pinkify” the toy aisle, and specifically construction toys, all the while inspiring a new generation of female engineers. These toys were right up our alley.
This weekend we sat down, just us girls, and started building. Each Goldieblox kit comes with a story that accompanies your building project. Since my girls are huge readers this really engaged them before they started building. The instructions were thorough and easy to follow. But my favorite part of the day is when I left them on their own for a bit and they ran to me with creations they had made.
“Look mom, I made this one up all by myself!!!”
My eight year old was challenged but completely able to succeed in putting together Katinka’s Parade Float. And Lily, who is eleven, loved making movies with GoldieBlox and the Movie Machine . Although I think Lily was totally partial to the HUGE Builder’s Survival Kit. This kit gives kids tons of options to create projects big and small. It was perfect for her inventive mind.
These toys are just well made and the concepts are brilliantly thought out. I love that the graphics will appeal to girls without playing down to them or making them over the top girly. Each kit has tons of possibilities so your kids won’t get bored. And shhh….. your boys will probably love it too.
I have an AMAZING GoldieBox prize pack to give away valued at almost $90. I am so excited for you and your girls to get to experience GoldieBlox for themselves!! Enter using the Rafflecopter below (email subscribers will need to click through to enter).
