Buy Local- Works For Me Wednesday

Can we just pause for a moment and love that picture. Cause I love that picture.

We have two more weeks of “green” tips. But this one is the one I have been trying to embrace the most in the past year. I buy local as much as I can. It started last year with food, but this year I am trying to expand to much more.

Obviously it is a great decision for your local economy. And here in Michigan we have a hurting economy so I want as much money to stay here as possible. But it also saves the earth. Less gas used for transporting goods across the country. More small businesses making often smaller impacts on the world around them. And when I buy local I try and buy organic as much as possible.

I am not going to lie to you. Sometimes buying local and organic does not have such a great impact on my wallet. But it is important to me so I am willing to make sacrifices in other areas. But buying local doesn’t always mean paying more. You can still bargain shop to find the best deal and I have found that knowing exactly where my food comes from is priceless.

Once again I am partnering with Scott Naturals. And once again, Scott Natural will be donating $1 to the NWF for every click through to this link. Scott will donate up to $25,000 so I hope you will take advantage of this easy way to donate to a great organization.

I have another great gift pack of Scott Naturals products for one of my readers. {Congrats to last week’s winner Lori from The Davidson Den} To win, leave a comment letting me know what, if anything, you try and buy local.

For extra entries:

  • Click through to the Scott Naturals 4 Week Test Drive site to help donate $1 to the National Wildlife Federation up to $25,000. Let me know you did so in the comments.
  • Pledge to take a 4 Week Test Drive of Scott Natural. If we all used Scott Naturals products for 4 weeks we could save over 2 million trees. As a bonus when you take the pledge you are entered to win a Ford Fusion.

Three chances to win. Please leave a separate comment for each entry. Winner will be chosen at random on May 3rd. Good luck!

Disclosure: I received a Scott Naturals gift pack and was compensated for my participation in this campaign by Scott Naturals and The Motherhood. As always all opinions are mine. This post is linked up to Works For Me Wednesday at We Are That Family.

I have to admit that I am not the best person at being green. I am the person who means well but just has a hard time following through. I have about 20 reusable bags that I always forget to take with me…thanks for the tip on the small reusable bags that fit in your purse…I bought a 4 of those and I have been using them frequently. I just have to take it one step at a time.

Oh…completely forgot about shopping locally. I am a big fan of Whole Foods. They offer a great variety of local products. I agree that it is a bit more expensive to buy organic and to buy local but I feel that it is totally worth it. I also loooove my local Farmer’s Market! I love meeting the person who actually grew the vegetables that I am feeding to my family :-).

Buying locally….Well, my husband and I would much rather go to a local, family owned type restaurant than a chain. But I will admit that I also can’t give up McDonalds for a quick Diet Coke fix.

Last summer I was just starting to go to farmer’s markets, but I still have a long ways to go, as far as knowing what to buy and cooking in season. Also, I just made a call today to get on a waiting list for grass fed beef!

  10. I buy my produce at the farmers market and love to go fruit picking – apples, strawberries, blueberries. I’m so excited that summer is almost here!

  11. Lori S says:

I eat at chiptole which tries to buy locally.
