As evidenced by our first dusting of snow last night, winter is upon us. While the snow might be pretty, you and I both know that winter wreaks havok on our hair. It is drying, there is enough static in the air to start a fire and don’t even get my started on winter hat hair. My hair needs a lot of help in the winter to keep it from looking like a dry, limp. static-y mess.
Ironically this is also the season of holiday parties. Whether you like your hair sleek and straight, curly or in a pretty updo, ain’t nobody got time for dried out hair. The key to any look is that you start out with healthy hair. Typically hair styles work a lot better when it hasn’t been washed in a few days. So how do you keep your hair from drying out without over compensating and being left with a greasy mess if you don’t wash it every day?
First, let’s look at a few of my favorite holiday hair looks I rounded up off Pinterest, and then we’ll discuss how to keep your hair in top form this winter so your hair will look beautiful no matter what style you chose.
- Messy Updo with Headbands:
This is such an easy look to recreate because the bun is supposed to look really messy. Just make sure you give yourself some height with a teasing comb so it doesn’t look to polished or flat.
- Headband Looped Bun
This style could truly not be easier and is especially great if you are short on time. Simply use a pretty headband that goes all the way around your head. Loop your hair up into the band in the back and pin stray hairs. Again I would tease the hair on top a bit to amplify the messy look.
- Soft Waves:
The Beauty Department (my all time favorite beauty blog) shows you how to look like you spent all afternoon getting a professional blow out. The result? Soft, shiny waves that might even look better tomorrow.
- High Ponytail
A ponytail doesn’t have to look like you just came from the gym! Set your hair with hot rollers. Tease at the crown. Then gather it up leaving some height on top but not on the sides. To polish off the look even more, wrap some hair around the ponytail to cover up the rubber band.
- Sleek and Straight
Love her or hate her, the woman just has fantastic hair. The key to slick straight hair is to only use your straightening iron on the bottom 2/3 of the hair so you keep a tiny bit of volume on top.
Which one is your favorite look?
Now, the secret to getting the best hair with which to acheieve these styles? Oil. Not greasy oil, but oil that puts back moisture into your hair that the environment is always stripping out. There is some super pricey hair oils out there that do amazing work. But I have found a bargain that does the same trick.
I have been using Dove’s new Pure Care Dry Oil collection for about a month now and love how soft and silky it leaves my hair. My hair is pretty fine so I can’t use anything that weighs it down. I also try to only wash my hair every other to every third day so I can’t use anything that is going to make it oily.
Dove’s Pure Care Dry Oil shampoo and conditioner have been perfect for my tempermental hair, but the product I have loved the most is their Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment. I put it on after towel drying my hair and then style it with the blowdryer and iron. Sometimes, if I am wearing my hair really straight and sleek, I add a touch more after drying and styling. It feels so silky and helps my hair really hold its style throughout the day.
Dove’s new Pure Care Dry Oil collection is suitable for all hair types and features a blend of African Macadamia oil and coconut oil.
