An Update of Sorts

*warning: this post talks about things birth related. If you don’t want to hear about bodily functions click away :)

Well it has been an eventful weekend to say the least. Friday morning started with my losing a certain plug one looks forward to losing at the end of their pregnancy. With Hannah, my labor started shortly after so I was hoping that would be the case again. I had a doctor’s appointment around three and she told me I was dilated to 2 and 50% effaced. Not anything to write home about, but it was a start.

Well I thought she might have gotten something started because I had contractions off and on all day, but around bedtime they started to get more intense and closer together so I packed up the bags, called in the reinforcements for the kiddos.

When we got to the hospital (p.s. the ER on Friday night = scary), my contractions were about 5-6 minutes apart. So they wheel me up to triage and begin the monitoring. Again, with Hannah this was the point where I dilated from 5-10 cm in 19 minutes so we were expecting things to move swiftly. They did a very pleasant exam (hello, thanks for palpating my esophagus) and I was dilated to 3. So that is some progress right. They send me walking to continue things along.

After some walking, they hook my back up and contractions are now 3-4 minutes apart. Yippee!! Well yippee until the nurse comes in, does another delightful exam and announces that I am still dilated to a 3 so they will probably send me home soon. Come again? I am still contracting every 3-4 minutes and although they aren’t super intense, hello, I am contracting over here!!

So they decide to let me stay the night and they will check me in the morning and see if I have progressed. Well of COURSE the contractions peter out in the middle of the night and although I manage to dilate another centimeter, they send me packing with no baby. Such a bummer. And the joy of it all is that the contractions are still going on. Not every 3-4 minutes by any means, but they are still going on and some lovely friends on Twitter shared the super helpful information that they walked around dilated to 4 and contracting for WEEKS. WEEKS!!!

Let’s just say I would avoid my presence if at all possible. I am not the most pleasant person to be around right now. Come on little man, we want to meet you!!!

  1. Awww. :( Here’s hoping it’s hours, possibly days, and definitely not weeks!
    Thanks for the update though!

  5. It’s the full moon…
But I’m sure your little guy will be here soon anyways!!
I was having contractions all day yesterday, but every time they’d be looking like they’d gotten regular, they’d go wonky again…
Sooooo frustrating b/c I kept getting myself psyched up and telling my husband ‘we might have to call my midwife soon!’right before realizing ‘oh, I’m not really in labor yet’…

And even though I can happily wait another week or two, it’s hard to de-psych myself, ya know? I want to meet little Algie (nickname while in utero – not real name)
Plus, contractions give me a headache and backache, and I say that’s not fair if they don’t really count. Right? :)

Anyways, I’ll be praying for you and your little guy!!

  6. sorry, I keep rereading this (aha, someone who is in the same boat!) when I realize you’re worse off…
    Man, 3-4 minutes apart… That’s rough. No fair :(

  7. shanaQ says:

so frustrating! I’m sorry. For me, the waiting was the hardest part of the pregnancy, especially when you have regular contractions that don’t turn out to be the real deal. Salt in the wound. Hang in there…you’re in my prayers!

  8. Oh my goodness! I would be going crazy! As much as I want to get pregnant and have a baby, I am terrified to go through labor! wow! Hang in there and good luck!

  9. Oh my goodness, I am so sorry!! I would be so frustrated, too! Can I just say that I can’t believe it’s already time for you to have this baby?? I have used you and a couple of other bloggers as my milestone markers because you are just a tad bit ahead of me (32 weeks now!) and now you are about to have your baby!!

  10. Had a similar experience with my 3rd daughter… told them I was NOT going home… and they gave me meds to speed things up. After an epidural & the meds, she came in 2 hours. Hope he comes soon!!!

  11. I WOULD avoid your presence … but I kinda like ya, so NO!

  12. Sending hugs and labor inducing vibes your way!! :)

  13. In the vein of TMI: go for some nippl3 stim. And then lots of lunges. And squats. And more nippl3 stim. My doula had me doing Baby Belly Boot Camp all over the hospital, lunging and squatting, trying to get things going. It worked. The next day, my legs were more sore from the workout than other things were from pushing out a 6 pound ham. I’m just sayin’…

    Hang in there, girlfriend!

  15. Im shocked they would send you home dilated to 4 considering how quickly you went from 5-10 previously!

    Borage Seed oil

and a stern lecture for that belly baby.

I hope full blown labor comes on soon because I still have a few weeks to go and I’m already feeling pretty stabby, I can imagine how you are feeling right now

  16. Oh girl I have sooo been there! Been sent home with the ambien only to find out I’m allergic to it and FREAKED out on it. I did finally go into labor two days later. Hang in there! And go get one of those big bouncy exercise balls, straddle it and bounce away! It softens the cervix and bangs that babies head on down! Hey, its better than having to have awkard preggo big belly sex! Lol

  17. My 3rd labor sounds a lot like that. I was contracting for WEEKS until I went to the hospital, hoping to just get admitted already. Of course, they sent me home, but they riled things up in the process. The next night, I was having a baby.

    Good luck!

  18. Sex. Uncomfortable but helpful in speeding up labor at this point.

  19. I lost my plug about 6 days before my water broke so hang in there. The baby will be here before you know it.

  26. Oh man! I feel for you! (I am first time commenter, mostly a lurker.) I spent 4 weeks dilated to a 4. The nurses would always check me and say, “Wow! You are going to have this baby at any minute.” But no, he didn’t want to come out… Hopefully it won’t take that long! Good Luck!

Poor lady….God has His perfect timing though!!! God bless you and hope you get to meet your new baby sooner than later!!! :)

  30. I did the false labour thing too, and when they told me I was 1cm, I was all excited. It took another week, and when the real thing came, I totally didn’t know whether to go to hospital or not! I think what pushed me over the edge was my desire to throw things at my husband. Thankfully, it was short-lived. :-)
