5 Fashion Trends To Avoid This Summer

I turn 38 in a few weeks (what??) and if there is one thing I have learned in my many years trying to navigate fashion it is this. Just because something is a trend, doesn’t mean you should wear it.

This starts in junior high when you must own acid washed pleated jeans (see? almost 38) even though you are extremely petite and you look like a mouse trying to wear an elephants clothes. Fast forward many years and it is a mom strutting around in Daisy Dukes not realizing that her days of “we wear short shorts” are long gone.

Dress in a way that flatters. Dress in a way that is appropriate for your age (not like a teenager, not like a frumpy old lady). Dress in a way that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Don’t dress a certain way just because a magazine tells you too. Although DO dress the way I tell you to. Or better yet, don’t dress this way because I told you not to.

Here are 5 current fashion trends I beg you to avoid:

1. Cropped Tops:

crop top

I guess I should be thankful that we haven’t gone back to cropped tops with low rise panes a la Britney Spears circa 2009, but I am just not sure we need to see each other’s stomachs outside of the pool. And even then it is questionable. Even if you have done Pilates every day for the last 15 years and you have abs of steel, keep your belly covered. Thank you.

2. Rompers:

In theory these are adorable. I look at that picture and want to give it a try. But in practicality these seem one step away from a onesie. I am pretty confident you should stop wearing them after age 3. The only exception I would make is as a beach cover up. Even then tread with caution.

3. Print Jeans

print jeans

I know I am a bit hypocritical on this one because I LOVE my Land’s End polka dot jeans and my Camo skimmers. BUT I think once you hit a certain age you need to modify this trend a bit. Keep your prints subtle and muted. You CAN pull it off. But with a caveat.

4. Overalls

Sigh. Listen, back in the day I wore my overalls OUT!! And rumor has it they are coming back and that is fine if you are a teenager. But they rarely flatter (I mean even that uber skinny model looks hippy) and just feel like you should be wearing pigtails on the farm

5. What the WHAT?

bikini dress

Well this might be the only way I could pull off a bikini??

What fashion trends do you think shouldn’t be for the masses?

  1. I tried a romper on once, just because I kinda think they look cute (on models). Thank the sweet Lord no one else was with me. Cause that thing? That thing looked HORRIBLE on me. Like all kinds of wrong. So, no to the rompers.

I’d love to try printed pants. I’ve seen some that are pretty cute. But because I’m not willing to dump much money into them, I’ve not found any that are that cute on me. So, it’s a trend that will just pass me by.

And overalls are forever maternity wear in my mind. When I was in high school and owned a pair of overalls, my oldest brother’s wife had just gotten pregnant. And she wore overalls every.day of her entire pregnancy. Let’s just say, overalls were soooo not cool for me after that.

  2. Tank style maxi dresses! For the love!

    • I need to clarify that I mean the spaghetti strap ones with the empire waistline. The regular ones are fine granted they aren’t dragging the ground. :)

  3. I am super in love with these polka-dotted jeans. Think I can pull them off? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1451663889/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1451663889&linkCode=as2&tag=vandewife-20

I would say florescents a la 1988. The little girls’ department at Target is enough to give me flashbacks and hives. The floral jeans are also not a favorite of mine.

      • Jill’s opinion is more valuable than mine, because she’s much more of a fashionista than I. That said, I think those jeans are adorable! I love the navy and white– you could pair so many fun-colored tops with them.

  4. But I own the What the What! I planned on wearing it at our next get together.

    Kidding – obviously.

    That is insane…

But overalls? I sorta love overalls.

    • Blerpdederp says:

Don’t listen to the negative Nancys here, if you love overalls than wear overalls! Part of being confident and happy is wearing what you like and skipping these silly “don’t wear this or that” posts. Wear what you like and like what you wear. I, like most people, won’t judge you for it.

  5. I’m gonna be blunt– you shouldn’t be wearing overalls once you have boobs. There’s just no way they’ll lay right or be even remotely flattering. For real. And, really? There’s a reason rompers are reserved the diapered-set. Who wants to to deal with removing an entire garment every time you need to go to the bathroom? (I apparently had stronger opinions on these matters than I even knew…)
